Weight Loss Plateau? - Help!

Hello,

Can someone please shed some light on my situation please??
I have lost about 40lb since having a baby in febuary by strictly eating 1200kcal a day and all before 5pm and doing light exercise for 30 minuites a day (A post partum exercise DVD and a 10 minuite squat routine)

I stopped losing weight on the last week of april and the scale hasnt budged since... I am still following my 1200kcal eating and 10 minuites of squats and my post partum dvd but have also started doing 20-30 minuites of cardio a day (on cross trainer) and my weight still hasnt budged at all.

I have tried upping my calories on a few days to see if it was because my body was in starvation mode, but the weight still hasnt come off.

I have also been measuring myself and have not lost any inches since the weight stopped coming off.

Please could anyone tell me why i am not losing weight or how to break out of what i think is a weight loss plateau

Thankyou! :) x

  • I was in a very similar situation up until this week. Almost 3 weeks with no loss even though I was working out and eating well. Then i realized what was missing... Water! As simple as that sounds, I was dehydrated and holding on to water weight. I would suggest drinking at least 8 cups a day and another 2 for every hour of exercise you do. (you can log it with MFP.) i came out of my plateau in 3 days and lost 3 lbs this week.

    Hope that helps! Good luck

Your diary is closed so flying blind.

1200 calories is probably too low unless you are 4'10".

If you do not weigh your food, most likely you are eating more.

If you are eating your exercise calories...MFP way says you should....they are most likely over estimated, try only 50% eating back.

If you are only losing baby weight and already lost 40lbs most likely you have little to lose, this means your body uses less calories during a regular day because it is smaller and you should only be losing .5 lbs per week. Your deficient will also be small so any miscalculation can put you at maintenance.

Starvation mode is not real in the sense that people use it. Metabolic adaptations happen but not where they make you stop losing weight or gain.

If you are close to goal, try body recomposition, that will make you smaller and tighter...may even gain weight but you'll look great naked, not only clothed.

Also weight loss does not follow a straight path.you have already been losing about 3lbs a week, this is unhealthy and not sustainable. Weight loss will bounce with normal body fluctuations and speed up and pause, just watch the trend.

How tall and heavy are you? and what is your goal?

Water could b part of it, but I would also suspect that it is because, as you correctly identified, you aren't eating enough. I presume that you are eating back your exercise calories, but to net 1200 is really a tough regime. I started at the same level as you and hit the same issue, but to test out a new regime properly, you need to do it for at least a few weeks to see if it has made a difference. The body simply doesnt react instantly to changes. It's more like trying to pilot a supertanker rather than a sports car! I suggest adjusting your weekly loss by a pound and stick to it for 2-3 weeks and then see what happens. Good luck!
