Hiya,
Not sure where you are, I'm in the UK. My induction was basically just showing me how to use the equipment, how to set it up for me (they noted the seat heights, weights etc). They got me to do an easy version of my regime which had already been built for me by a trainer, so was just 3 minutes or so on each to see how it felt and to show I could use it safely.
Nothing scary, you'll be fine0 -
During inductions trainers will usually talk you through the different machines at the gym and show you how to use them safely.
If you plan to work with a trainer, be sure about your goals and what you want to achieve and make sure your instructor is clear on this. Together you'll then put together a training programme and schedule.
The instructor may also give some nutritional advice but depending on their qualifications I would not take this as gospel. Use a dietitian for dietary advice, fitness instructors for fitness advice.0 -

This is good advice especially regarding the nutrition. Good luck at the gym, have a great time you will grow to love it :flowerforyou:0 -

Depends on the gym, I joined a local gym a couple of years ago and my induction was a group one, (me and a couple of friends) a guy took us round and showed us how to use the different equipment and had us try ones we weren't familiar with.
I think he did record weight and height, didn't do measurements...
I more recently joined a Pure Gym, the induction was optional, I chose not to have one.0 -
How about trying to find a ladies only gym. They weigh and measure you but it just feels more comfortable if you dont feel too comfortable then they show you around on how to use the equipment. Also the good thing about the ladies only gym is they dont have any mirrors around why you are working out.
Once you get to know how to use the equipment you will be up and running
Go and enjoy.0 -
I've joined two gyms over the last 2 years, and they didn't weigh me or take measurements at either of the inductions.
The first was an induction for me and another guy who very obviously knew his way around a gym. The guy did a really quick whistle-stop tour to show us where things were, how to set up the treadmill etc and then he told the other guy he was good to go. He spent a little extra time with me going through all of the machines that I wanted to know about, asking me my goals etc. At the time I wasn't that interested in the gym (more the pool) but he was really nice and at no point did I feel embarrassed about not having a clue!
The second one was a group one with about 10 people - the guy just showed us each machine, how it works, what it's for etc
Don't feel embarrassed or nervous, and if there's anything you don't know or want more information on - ASK. That's what they get paid for0 -
At my induction, my trainer took my blood pressure to make sure I was safe to exercise. He had to do it twice as the first time it was too high to be safe because I was panicking at being in a gym. He was such a sweetheart though and calmed me down straight away.
My trainer asked what I wanted to get out of going to the gym and came up with a plan for me to follow. He showed me how all of the machines I needed worked and then made sure I was using them properly too. He took as long as was required, didn't rush me.
Honestly, walking into the gym that day felt like the scariest thing I had ever done in my life, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined. People who go to gyms all have their own goals to meet, and none of those involve staring at you and making you feel bad. I am the last person anyone would expect to become a card-carrying gym person, but look at me now.
I'm not sure exercisng at the gym has had much of an effect on my weight loss - it's been mostly diet related - but I feel fitter and generally healthier in myself, which is awesome. I really recommend feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Tell your trainer how you're feeling and she or he will tailor your induction accordingly.0 -
