Help, please! Just bought my food scale...

I feel kind of stupid for asking, but I just bought my food scale (I've been estimating for almost 2 weeks) and it only weighs in ounces and pounds. I have some salmon fillets and don't know how to convert grams to ounces. How many ounces is in a serving (MFP gives me 140 grams...?) And am I supposed to weigh before or after it's cooked?

Thanks so much!

Use Google.com. They will do the conversions for you. :)

I would do after it's cooked (cuz cooking causes some loss of nutrition). There are plenty of grams to ounces conversion calculators online. Here's one:

  • Thank you!!!

    28g equals approximately 1 ounce.

Oooh that sucks. I have a food scale I bought for $10 or so on Amazon and it measures grams, oz, lbs, and kg. If this scale you bought wasn't too much money I would give it to a friend and just buy one that measures grams because I use mine every day and 85% of the foods I measure are in grams. Grams are also more helpful to measure in than ounces because it is more precise (smaller increments).

It would suck to keep doing those conversions and will probably save you more time = money in the long run.

    Good luck!

It didn't cost too much, but my budget says I'm not allowed to buy another one right now. :) But, thanks for the tip - it was the only one in the store, and I never thought about grams. The conversion website DrBorkBork gave me will just have to do for now. It worked, so I'll just be inconvenienced until I decide to buy a new one! Thanks for letting me know there are ones out there that do measure grams, though! Who knew??? LOL
  • I think you weigh it before you cook it because I know a 1/4 pounder at McDonald's is only a 1/4 pounder before it is cooked....it makes me feel so jipped!
  • Great, Dinger! You tell me AFTER I eat it?!? LMAO!

You always weigh AFTER it's cooked. Yes you do lose some "size" after cooking but it's usually juices/fat/liquid and isn't any of the meat part (does that make sense?). The fat you just want to get rid of because we just don't need to be eating it and if it's water, then it doesn't really add/subtract any calories. Most of the entries in MFP would be for cooked meat unless it states that it's "raw".
  • You're supposed to weight it before! :)
