17500 calories over maintenance

Hi everyone!

I've been having a bad week and ended up binging for 6 days. In total, I've consumed about 17500 over maintenance, so technically will have gained 5 pounds.

But I was wondering if I have really gained all of those 5 pounds ? Surely the body can't absorb all of those extra calories in such a short time?

Thanks!

    Hi

No I wouldn't have thought so but you don't want to make this a permanent habit thinking oh its only 6 days or whatever, I go over especially since my dads ill but never by that amount, my advice is to recognise you binged you cant undo that but you can start again so you don't undo all your hard work

Nope, unfortunately the body is actually extremely efficient at storing fat. You probably will store the majority of those calories. Just move on, identify what led to your binge, and correct that behavior.

Your body will store it all. Sorry.

Personally, I wouldn't over think this. You ate a bunch of extra calories. Figure out why (are you regularly eating at too big of a deficit? is it emotional eating?) Then move on from it. If you gain, then just work harder to make sure it doesn't happen again., but either way, just move forward from this.

The body loves to store fat, actually. But hey, it's not that big a deal. I'd look at why you did what you did and work on controlling that behavior before you did anything else, honestly.

OP you posted this on another thread a few weeks ago:
    Thanks for your replies !

I was also wondering, seeing as I want to put on weight, if there was a way I would do it without gaining too much fat, and somehow look leaner ? I'm technically a bit underweight, but I still have a fair bit of fat on my thighs and stomach.

So surely gaining is what you want to do? You were also advised to lift if you want to lose fat. :)

This documentary may help you understand why the binge.

You can get a grip though, and get back on the wagon.

We're here to encourage you. You're not alone!

Thanks for all your replies :)!

I've always had a tendency to overeat when I'm feeling down, or if I'm sick, but I'm actually surprised that I've managed to overeat by that much ! Anyway I'm back on the wagon now and going to eat normally :).

ravenmiss: Yeah I want to gain a little bit of weight, but I would have prefered if it was done over the space of a couple of weeks and healthily, instead of binging for 6 days on junk food. But I'm not that fussed if I have gained all of those 5 pounds.

I'm just asking the question bcause I find it a bit hard to believe that the body will automatically store every calorie over maintenance as fat. I thought that some of it must come out as waste or something.

No problem, I just wanted to clarify it as so many people assume everyone is on here to lose weight.

    Hope you're feeling better ^_^

There is a member here named Magerum who went over cals during a vacay and gained and then corrected it the following week with relative ease. I don't remember the name of the thread though, but if you find it you will see you are not in as deep a hole as you might think.

Since i have been tracking on MFP, i too am surprised how much i have gone over maintenance calories. I have gone over by as much as 10,000 in one day (so don't feel too bad). Yes i have eaten over 13,000 calories in one day!

Get back on track and you will see this is merely a blip.

Since i began intermittent fasting (combined with IIFYM) about one month ago, i have noticed that i don't gorge at all (probably because i can eat what i want). Interestingly, since i have given myself free reign on food, i eat much "healthier" (i.e. lots of veggies, fruit, real food...)

But to correct a 10, 000 over maintenance would mean starvation throughout the week -- which could prime someone for another gorge

Ramp up your exercise for a couple of days, and regard it as extra fuel for the workouts...you will soon see its gone.
    Don't sweat it.

chani8: Thanks for the link! The video explains everything so clearly! I recommend this video for everyone struggling to not regain all the weight they've lost.

MyChocolateDi: Do you remember where the thread was posted ? (was it in "General Diet and Weight Loss Help" or somewhere else ?)

43mmmgoody21: Wow that must have been some binges :O! I don't feel so alone now ^^.
I'm glad that you've found something that workd for you :). Do you do the 5:2 diet ? How do you manage to fast one day without overeating the next day ?

"Your body keeps an accurate journal regardless of what you write down." This is a popular quote on MFP. And unfortunately, your body has a loooooooong memory of what you eat--all of it down to the last fraction of a calorie.

Just jump back on the wagon and try not to put yourself back in the place that caused you to binge. New habits are hard to stick with in the beginning, but YOU CAN DO IT! Good luck!

    [/quote]

----> Do you do the 5:2 diet ?

I follow a 16-18 hour fast followed by a 6-8 hour eating window.

----> How do you manage to fast one day without overeating the next day ?

I really enjoy big meals and intermittent fasting allows me to do that. After the first 2 weeks of getting used to not eating breakfast (and even lunch), i am only hungry an hour before i am scheduled to eat. However, i suspect this is psychological because i have had fasts as long as 21 hours (in order to have a complete pig out in one meal) and i wasn't any more hungry. I thoroughly enjoy eating my last huge meal at about 9-10 at night. And i enjoy longer fasts when i feel like having 2 huge meals (or when i go out to eat).

Because i also follow iifym (if it fits your macros) no food is off limits-- whenever i crave something (as long as it is in my eating window and "it fits my macros") i indulge. However, i find that while i still eat some crap i do much less often. For example, right now i have ice cream (about 1/4 eaten) sitting in the freezer. Prior to intermittent fasting (and iifym) ice cream never lasted longer than the day it was bought (i am serious).

With this i can literally have my cake (or in my case ice cream) and eat it too!

Unfortunately 17,500 calories is not enough to reach saturation. There are just too many factors and enzyme saturation (lipase, amylase, etc) and transportation of molecules across the bilayers are just a couple of them.

From what I've gathered it'd be at least 10,000 calories or more each day to reach the saturation point. (Unfortunately) I can do that easily.

You make a good point about some food coming out as waste. Here's the thing. When you do step on the scale , you may find that you've gained 10-15 lbs rather than the 5 you expected. It's that excess unexpected weight that'll level off over time because it wasn't actually body mass/fat gain but just the volume of food, water retention, etc from eating a large quantity of food

I often wonder how people complain they have a hard time eating 2500 calories a day. I find it easy (even eating "clean"). 10,000 calorie days are not a problem (and very easy with crap food).

I gained 3 pounds on vacation last year (we went on a 7 day cruise) and the pounds came right off within two weeks of returning home and eating right.

Sure hope it was worth it. Chalk it up to a bad week and move on. I indulged over Christmas, put on some extra pounds, dropped them, plus a few extra when I got back into my regular routine.

I generally have a cheat day every other week when my family comes to visit. I eat what I want and I guarantee you, I eat an excessive amount of calories. No holds barred on what I eat. The next day I get right back on track and eat right and exercise and keep that up and usually in a week or two, I am right back where I started and sometimes even lose a little more. I am not in a hurry to lose anymore. Vacillating between maintenance and wanting to lose a few more...but I am at a decent weight for me right now. Just telling you how I manage my overeating. Went 3 days eating like that my birthday weekend and Mother's day weekend combined. Actually ate myself sick. But I got right back and actually lost .4 of a pound this week, so it can be done and I have hypothyroid disease. Just pull yourself up by the boot straps and get back on track, you can reverse the damage.

I mentioned this in another thread, but over Mother's day weekend I had two days where I had my favorite pizza (somewhere around 7-10 slices each day). Others day included tons of Indian food, tons of Korean food, my favorite 1000+ calorie burger.

Ended up gaining about 1kg over those 5 days but have since gone back to where I was before and then lost more.

43mmmgoody21: That sounds like the ideal plan for me :) (but if I fast then I have the tendency to binge and I have absolutely no will power lol) I have to eat something for breakfast, lunch and dinner sadly, so I can't have huge meals ^^

So I probably have gained the 5 pounds then, oh well ! Just going to have to get back on track and hopefully in about two weeks I'll have lost most of that weight :). I'm not going to weigh myself until then, and have already removed all temptation to binge!

Last night, before bed (at about 10:00) this is what i ate-- i love potatoes

750 grams of baked Russet potatoes (600 cals)
--> 4 tbsp (64 grams--> 340 cals) of chocolate peanut butter on top of half the potatoes
    --> 30 g (~ 6 tsp--> 210cals) margarine on the other half of the potatoes
    - 400 grams of pork loin (with Montreal Style Seasoning)--> 600 cals
    - 260 grams of broccoli--> 88cals
    - 157 grams of blueberries --> 89 cals
    - 15 no sugar added Mr. Freezie (only 5 calories each-- --> 75 cals

    - 3 cups of water
--> Total Calories for this meal = 2002 (and total for the day ~ 3000 calories).

Did i wake up hungry?-- no!

Once you get through the idea of not eating breakfast (it was hard at first), the rest of the day at work is a piece of cake. I generally break my fast at dinner with my family (about 1000 calories).

When i began intermittent fasting, i was eating about 2000 calories/day. So i spread my calories over 2-3 meals as my "wants" for the day lead me. If i was hungry i ate a bit earlier. Intermittent Fasting isn't the answer for everyone but as i am not usually hungry through the day (probably because of the huge meals i eat at night) it works well for me. A Bonus is it does not affect my social life (because i go out at night-- i can eat to my heart's content-- as long as it fits my macros)
