Do I have a wide back? (female) *pics*

In the mist of losing weight... 154 pounds currently....
Lots of body fat to shred.


Just need to know is my back wide? or does it just look broad because of the back fat? Do I have a wide back in bone structure.
Worried and afraid I have a big back like a man... overreacting or I really do I need to learn to love it?

    It's wide and it's fatty. HOWEVER, from what I can see, with the small waist, you will have a really cool shape when you lose it. Work those back muscles girl! You will see later.

    think you will be very happy when you drop some fat.

    obviously the stuff towards your waste is fat.

    i think when you loose the fat you'll like what you see. you might appear a bit more athletic then the next girl, but thats not a bad thing

    you can't do diddle about your bone structure- so keep working out- work the calorie deficit and get stronger.

    (well- take that with a tablespoon of salt- I'm a big fan of broad backs- more women should have them- they are sexy)

    It's also the type of sports top you are wearing. Take another picture wearing a fitted sleeveless or tank top and compare them.

    I built a wide back on purpose. Gives me a sexy hour glass shape especially in tight dresses.

    It looks to me like you still have fat there and you'll be narrower when your body fat gets lower. It's also how you stand (your shoulders slump forward instead of pulling your shoulders back and standing tall). Learn to love your shape now. You'll be happier when you get to your goal.

    Honestly it doesn't either seem very fat nor very wide. You took the picture from very close so it's hard to compare your shoulders to the rest of your body! And the stretch top also doesn't help. I can see space for improvement though, if that's what you mean... but nothing very far from what any member of MPF might have already dealt with! What are your goals exactly?

    ^This. I have fairly broad shoulders and have always received complements, so I wouldn't worry about it! Plus it will make your waist look that much smaller.

    Yup, posture makes a HUGE difference.

    I have broad shoulders/back, and I had to get a wedding dress with a corset back just to accommodate my body. OP, you won't mind as you get closer to goal.

    Thank you for the answer. I appreciate it. And, my goal is 135 .... I mean, I'm really looking to lose body fat more so than anything else. This is my second month and I have only lost 10 pounds.... but the inches is trying to shred..

  • I think it's not the best Kodak to make an assessment. I think sports bra's do not do justice. I think you look great and keep up the hard work. Talk to a trainer to give you tips on how to not make it look wide, muscle wise. I had a trainer come to me and tell me about my lat pull down technique and where I should be holding the bar to prevent a wide back appearance....

    Your posture may have something to do with it. Try rolling your shoulders back and down. Your posture will help you fake it 'til you make it! It looks as though you may have wide shoulders like I do, which will make your waist look even smaller when you have reached your goal.

    It's all good. I have broad shoulders. I look wide from the back, too. It's in my genes, but I'm going to make it as defined as possible. :bigsmile:

    Honestly, it's too early to tell because you still have back fat. You will need to lower your body fat percentage over the coming months and then post a new pic, maybe at the end of the summer.

    I used to think my back was wide but now it's more normal looking since I've lost some weight. I still have a bit of a stomach because that is the place where it came on first and the last place my body loses fat from. I also want to lose more inches off my back and hips, but I have the most inches to lose on my stomach. Heck, even after I reach my goal I might have to lose more if my stomach is still big.

    Keep a good diet, and lose 0.5-2 lbs/week. Make sure you exercise to preserve as much muscle as possible.

    Your posture will improve the more you work your back. (Deadlifts are awesome for this)

    Your back appearance will improve the more you work your back. The muscle will get more dense, the fat will start to leave.

    Double bonus, and you should see drastic improvements because of it as you progress. I think you will be very happy as you get closer to your goal.

    FWIW, it looks to me like a fair amount of your width in that shot is fat - but like others have said, whether your back is particularly wide is hard to tell from this shot. No way to judge the proportion against the rest of your body.

    I pretty much had the same lool going on four months ago. The back fat will disappear in no time if you track cals, lift heavy and do some cardio. Barbell rows are amazing for this BTW.

    Who cares? It's the back you have so learn to love it whether it's wide or not!! Some of us are working hard to widen our backs!!! Keep losing and it will look just fine!!

    I am almost 6 feet so everything on me is wider and bigger than most. I have learnt to get over it and try my best to be happy with what I have been given 'cause there is little I can do about most of it

    Congrats on your loss to date. Keep at it!!

    That's what mine looks like. I have broad shoulders too. Your waist looks tiny underneath the little extra (which I have too!). You look good and you are going to look even better, just keep it up!
