What I used to do and what changed

Hi all!

I was thinking a bit earlier about the naughty things I used to eat that now horrify me, and what has changed with my attitude towards food. And I was curious what others think about themselves. Did you use to eat something that you now want to forget all about, and what is the biggest, most significal mental change you have found with yourself?

My worst thing: I thought it was a great idea as a university student to use peanut butter as dip for Twix chocolate bars. And the worst thing is that sometimes, I still crave it at times.

Biggest mental change: I never bothered with checking calories before. I grew up not having to worry about it, with my Mum making meat and two veg meals. I was always one of the bigger girls, but more in a sturdy way. Then I moved to another country, got big, lived by myself for awhile and used food to enjoy myself and just ate. Not caring. Now? I check calories automatically. I consciously make better choices. My favourite bags of snacks tend to be lesser calorie ones.

So, sure. I have a way to go. But at least something in my head clicked and changed.

No, I never ate anything I want to forget all about. In fact I haven't changed what I eat at all, just how much of it I eat. That is my biggest mental change as well. I now get that I don't need 3 pieces of pepperoni pizza dipped in a cup of ranch lol, I can just have one dipped in a little light ranch. I don't need a handful of M&M's, I can just have a few.

Crave a twix bar dipped in peanut butter and even eat it if you want. Fit it into your day just like anything else.

You may very well be a genius. Off to find a Twix... :drinker:

Goodness the list goes on and on! ;-) I think the worst was growing up my entire family cooked with lard, so bad for you. It was used mainly to fry things up in like potatoes, dough, and intestines. To this day lard repulses me. Nowadays I eat a heck of a lot more veggies, especially when I'm cutting and need to satiate my appetite but I will still have the occassional glass of wine with a handful of Brookside dark chocolates or a slice of cake. Everything in moderation...except lard.

Usually sound advices, except for the fact I have no self control if that is waved under my nose! And a part of me is worried that I after all these years suddenly won't like it (now THAT would be scary!)

Mmm...saying that, 3 pepperoni in a cup of ranch? I like where your mind went. Also, you most likely have one of the better attitudes! A little bit of what you love doesn't make you unhealthy!

I used to be able to polish off a large dominos pizza to myself....I'd feel stuffed after, but not care. :(

Erm....I now take the time to enjoy the food I'm eating while I'm eating it, and eat slower to savour it. That way, I don't want to constantly move on to eating something else an hour later.

I don't feel like I really ate anything THAT horrible that I truly regret...mostly I think I was very ignorant about calories and other things. If you asked me five years ago what's a "worse" breakfast - 2 scrambled eggs, toast with a little bit of jam, and coffee with milk, or a big bowl of frosted shredded wheat with milk and a cup of oj, I would have sincerely believed the cereal/juice breakfast was much lower calorie and more healthy for me. I would have thought a tall Starbucks mocha had fewer calories than a Cadbury egg (actually it has more than twice the calories). Now that I know more about what I'm eating, I am more satisfied and often enjoy my food much more.

My worst thing: I love cheese bread, and I used to make it all the time - I'm talking almost every day for a week out of the month.

Biggest mental change: I now look at the calories in my food and think, is that worth needing to work out for an hour to make up for? the answer is usually NAHHH. I can eat that other thing instead that's delicious and way lower calorie. Or I just eat less of it.

Albeit I still ate a cookie today. Hey, it forces me to go to the gym, right?

The only thing I have changed is how much of thing I eat.

I started out being very restrictive and not allowing myself to eat certain things. This resulted in failure and regaining much of my weight in the end.

The mental change I made that made all the difference is that I am not on a diet. I am changing my life, so having pizza, or Twix dipped in peanut butter, or for the love of all that is holy, Nachos Bell Grande with a Baja Blast, every now and again is really just a part of life.

Now that I'm no longer "dieting" I've been able to sustain my weight loss and stay within a healthy weight range for myself.

I think it's already been said, but I still enjoy the foods I used to, just in moderation. That way I don't feel deprived of the things I love. I have changed the amount of water vs. soda consumption, though. Lots more water, lots less soda. So... just buy one twix and enjoy! I sure would! Good luck with your weight loss goals!
