OMG..... eating oatmeal sounds like a fat cow chomping on a fat cow. Anybody else have issues with sounds while they are eating, or when others eat?
This is really starting to drive me bananas. It's called misophonia.

I do! They were talking about it on Dr. Phil one day and I couldn't believe it was an actual thing. I thought everyone just drove me nuts for no reason all the time. My husband makes it so much worse. He takes enormous bites of everything and just really chomps. It makes me crazy.0

Generally no, but obviously noisy chewers do annoy me.0
-
Not personally but knowing folks like you exist (I work with one) makes me super self conscious about eating loud things like apples at my desk.0

Julie - yes I saw a video I think it was of the Today show, and I was just about in tears, because people make fun of me tell me I'm just being an *kitten* about it, but they do not understand the complete and utter anger I have for these sounds.
And what's getting me is my sound base is getting bigger, primarily it's just chewing, and they say if the person is close to you or you know them well, it's even worse with them. I have a girlfriend that I simply can't eat lunch with at work, it's horrid, absolutely horrid. I sit in silent anger. So I just don't eat with her, other friends are fine though....
But the other day my daughter was playing with an empty water bottle (kind of like a dog would play with it) squeezing it and making that crackle sound...and I absolutely without good reason yelled at her for it. Super big yell. Then I caught myself, but ugh. This is getting ridiculous.
And like this morning, I'm making myself mad, I'm the one eating the oatmeal and I cant stand the sound....0 -

I know it definetly makes me think about what I'm eating and where I'm eating it.0 -
Makes me wanna throw my head through a wall. My husband especially sounds like an effing dog eating poop especially eating bagels with cream cheese. He thinks I'm a jerk, but I really can't help it.0

Teeth on a fork or crunchy stuff drives my husband nuts. I've been married so long that sometimes I eat crunchy stuff just to get under his skin. LOL
Snapping and popping gum aggravates me.0 -
I am just so happy to hear I am not the only one. I honestly thought something was wrong with me:)0
-
I'm glad you mentioned this...this happens to me but just when I'm tired and only with my hubby. Drives me crazy!!! Glad it's not just me being a biotch0

The sound of chewing- like people you can hear with their mouth closed and the noises they make- it makes me crazy.
Sometimes it even bothers me when it's MY noises- and I'm not talking like- loud crunchy things- I'm talking like internal chewing noises. I am objectively aware it's a little OCD of me to be bothered by it- and my BF gives me *kitten* about it- but I can't help it... I have stopped eating certain things because I can't stand the sound they make when I chew.
Seriously- it's so annoying. I'll get up and leave an area if someone is making really loud noises- I just. I can't. I just can't.0 -
Yes. My husband can make soft foods sound crunchy. He chomps his teeth together. It makes me instantly angry. And my room mate smacks his lips. And any chewing noises, really. I have to turn something on loud. When my husband is running late and has to eat in the car I have to crank the music. I don't blame other people, I am more upset with myself for being so annoyed and irritated. It's really annoying because if I do snap at him he makes more noise. I don't mean to snap. Ugh. I hate the whole situation.0

I have always thought this was just me! Now that I know this is an actual thing, I feel vindicated!!!0
-
I also thought it was just me. My ex's eating was so bad that I would want to run away. I couldn't stay in the same area as him while he eats. But I find this to be true in so many cases. I hate hearing people chew chips or slurping soup.0

Yes, for those that have experienced this, there is waaay too little information out there about it. And you do feel very alone, isolated or whatever you want to call it.
So if anyone has any suggestions on how they deal with it, or have had any success with it getting better.... please please I think many people could benefit from it.0 -
I have this problem. but mine goes beyone the sounds. I hate to even watch people eat. I am sure it comes from my own issues with food. I hate the sound of chewing anything, or the breathing when people are chewing, I hate the sound of a fork hitting a plate. I hate the sound of lips smacking together.
and if I watch people. I almost get sick. I have a freind who always chews with their mouth open, they eat fast, and almost always have food on their lips or face when eating. and then add in the sounds. uuhhhggg. I know I sound like a horrible person, but it is so gross sometimes. and finally how difficult is it to use a napkin and not talk with your mouth full? ok I am done.0 -
I don't really focus on others' eating sounds, but maybe that's because I'm not around any noisy eaters. For me, it's other things, like heavy breathing and dog barks. My husband doesn't really understand it at all. He thinks I'm just hypersensitive and overreact.
Yesterday, the dog was barking outside for 15 straight minutes in the backyard on one side of the house, and I was working out inside on the other side of the house with the radio on full blast. After fifteen minutes of it, I angrily walked outside and got the dog. My husband said, "You could HEAR that all the way over there?" I said yes, and asked him why he wasn't doing anything about it. He just said the dog is being a dog, and it's no big deal.
The breathing thing is much harder to deal with. My husband doesn't snore, but he's a heavy breather when he sleeps. I usually have to fall asleep before him so I don't hear it. It will keep me awake. Then if I happen to wake up in the middle of the night for some reason, it's painfully hard to go back to sleep.0 -
It's always bothered me. If I'm alone with another person, I need the tv or radio on to cover the sound. It's like finger nails on a chalk board. In fact, the lip smacking, eating noise bugs me so much I can't stand heavy make out scenes in movies with a lot of wet kissing.0

Do any of you need to verbalize your emotions when you experience a provoking sound?0

I only do when it's something that can be controlled, like the dog barks. My husband could have done something about that. The breathing though, I just try to work around it. Most of the time, nobody ever notices it but me, and I try not to sound like an *kitten* about it. There's an obese lady that I work with, and she huffs and puffs with every step. It drives. Me. Insane. But there's nothing she can do about it, short of holding her breath or losing weight, so it's best not to say anything.
Another sound that irritates is sniffling. It doesn't matter if it's a child or an adult, it goes all over me. I only vocalize that if it's an adult, because they should know to grab a damn kleenex and take care of it. Most of the time they don't even realize they're doing it, and it never crosses their mind that it's annoying.0 -
Ha...yes....I hate noises.
My boss makes a loud breathing noise/grunt like every other second and it drives me absolutely insane. That's not even describing the irritation it brings me. The only way I can lessen my anger that comes with hearing it constantly is through mimicking it, not a preferred thing I'd like to do but it's the only way I can partially survive the work day. It's seriously the worst thing ever.
I don't say anything, because it's like how the crap do you say "hey your breathing annoys the *kitten* out of me, could you stop?" in an appropriate way??
I hope you find some relief for this, because I understand how it can be the absolute most annoying, frustrating, irritating thing EVER. (I'm pretty much pounding into the keyboard as I type this because I'm annoyed just thinking about the noise).0 -
I can't stand people that eat loud!
I honetly can't be anywhere near my father when he eats (unless there is really loud music) makes me shudder

Oh my goodness, yes. The crinkly bottles that the dogs play with and the wet kissing noises on tv! They all drive me bonkers. And the dogs are always trying to lick, which I think is gross anyway, but they will start licking my husband's feet or hand if he's just sitting there and I have to yell at them. The licking noise is one I definitely have to be vocal about. I can't stand that sound.
The eating noises I try really hard not to say anything because I know it's not bothering anyone else and it's just me being a freak, lol! I just try to think happy thoughts or try to get done and get away from the table and the noise.0 -
And the dogs are always trying to lick.
When the sound of my dog dining on her own *kitten* drowns out the sound of the t.v.0 -

not with myself eating, but a few of my friends and family have this really annoying habit of looking over my shoulder while im on my laptop while they are eating, puts their mouth pretty much right beside my ear.
a few people have gotten smacked as result0 -
My husband makes it so much worse. He takes enormous bites of everything and just really chomps. It makes me crazy.
My ex husband was like that. HUGE giant mouthfuls. He would use the big serving spoon if it was clean and in the drawer (I used to hide it). Also, he would take a BIG drink of ..whatever.. while he still had food in his mouth, then continue chewing after he swallowed the liquid. That used to make me throw up in my mouth when he did that.
Another ex was a slurper. Everything he ate, he would take big bites and then "FTHP FTHP FTHP FTHP" it into his mouth. I *NEVER* made soup when he was eating over, just because I knew I'd never be able to handle the noise.0 -
I can relate to almost all of these! I thought I was just weird! I guess if I am, I'm not alone. :laugh:0

Chill out dude, it's just a discussion. :huh:0 -
I threaten to make my kids eat in the barn sometimes. I've "solved" the issue by keeping the news on while we eat, that way I'm distracted by the deplorable sounds of those around me while they eat. Restaurants become an issue, though.0
-
do you voice your issues?
depends on who I'm with. If it's my BF- I'll say something- if it's with someone I'm close- I'll say something- most coworkers and public events- I'll keep to myself and I pretty much have to meditate on drinking water or making small talk and really trying to not think about it. The more I think about it- the more sick to my stomach I get.
I didn't know this had a name actually (thank you) doign some research now

From MY physical visceral reaction as well as what I see here on this board- this is not uncommon and nor is it some trivial- oh she shouldn't have her pants pulled so low kind if irritation.
I honestly get really irate with people who make too much noise chewing- it takes real meditative practice for me to deal with it.
Loud chewing with an open mouth- or even closed mouth chewing (you know that sound you can still here it)
smacking- slurping- its insufferable. It's a flat out deal breaker- and I cannot eat in silence- even myself. It makes me THAT unhappy.
either really angry- or really disgusted- to the point I have to leave or stop eating.
I would be comfortable saying it goes far beyond just a mild irritation.0
