Losing weight WITHOUT exercise

Hi all,

I've been told, and have read several articles to attest to, that you can lose weight without exercise if you just keep a calorie deficit. I'm wondering if anyone here has had success at this.

I ask because I am unable to exercise because one, I have slipped disks in my back, Achilles' tendinitis so severe that walking more than 2 blocks is agony, and pain in both knees. My doctor has advised not to lift weights because of the possible damage to my spine, and I can't even walk anymore like I used to love to do. Also I work two jobs and only have one day off a week, which leaves very little time to get a workout in. I DO have an exercise bike.

Any advice is much appreciated!

    It is true.
Eat at a deficit and you will lose.
Now, if you dont exercise you may lose more muscle and may not be able to eat as much and stay in a deficit, but it is very doable.

Many have - and studies have proven it too. Just keep a moderate calorie deficit (~500/day) and keep protein relatively high (above ~20% of calories). Adding cycling will speed your results of course. If you can do one of your jobs ON the exercise bike, do that.

    What started your Achilles tendinitis?

Yes. For weight loss, eating less is more important than exercise. You might feel better if you do chair exercises for stretching and/ or yoga-type breathing that you can find on youtube.

I've done it before. I lost from my highest weight without exercise, and i kept most of it off. I have a lot of health issues that prevent exercise, too, but I'm trying to find things i can do to keep my energy and strength up. Or to keep from having my body degenerate any more. Have you considered physical therapy?

    This!^

I've lost weight without exercise. It can be done.

Exercise is for health & fitness. I exercise (now) because ....... I can. I'm over 50 and have seen a decline in my fitness over the years. I used to take certain things for granted.

If you want to exercise (maintaining weight lost will be easier).....start small. 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there....it all adds up.

It can be done.. I lost 50 lbs not exercising. But exercise is good for you and boy do I feel SOOO much happier now that I do! It feel great. If you have physical limitations I strongly recommend even light stretching and yoga.

I guess it IS true, but I like exercise and I like the idea of my mus-kles being strong.

By the way, exercise is not a fad. It's not the devil, you know.

Yes, I've been told I should do physical therapy but the insurance doesn't cover it and I can't afford to pay for it. :(

Eating at a deficit = weight loss
    Exercise = fitness

I know it's not and I would LOVE to be able to walk and hike again. I just physically am unable to do so. The pain in my ankles and knees is just too much.

Yes you can. I am down over 50 since January 1st and I don't exercise except walking once in a while.

I did it. Lost a bunch of muscle, too. Wish I had exercised.

Years ago fewer people were fat.
Of course years ago we walked more (corner stores, parks, fewer elevators & escalators), worked more physically (Even the typing pool got a better daily workout then me sitting at a computer all day), and spent less time using machines/pre-processed stuff in the kitchen.
As tech spreads, so do the people's butts.
We keep eating like we are working hard, when instead we are working smart.

OP: Cals in less than Cals burned = Weight loss. It really is as simple as that.

If you burn 2000cals and don't workout, while eating 1800, you will lose weight, due to a 200cal deficit. Say 1lb every 17.5days

If you burn 2000cals, and another 150cals from going for a slow 30 min bike ride, and eat 1800, you will lose weight, due to a 350cal deficit, or 1lb every 10 days.
