Do I have this TDEE/BMR thing right this time?

In the past, i have lost some weight, slowly. I am at it again, and I just revisited the topic of TDEE./BMR, and I think I was doing it wrong last time. I had calculated my BMR/TDEE using iifym caculator, using sedentary because I have a desk job. I was eating TDEE-20%, and on the days i exercised, I would usually eat back some or most of my calories. So essentially, I was eating at full TDEE, right?

This time if i understand it right, I am to calculate my TDEE using sedentary again, and my calories should be TDEE-20%, and I should NOT eat back the calories, right? I am certain about my activity level. I have not been exercising on a regular basis. Now that I am trying to get in shape I have been and will be getting in an hour a day for at least 4 days of the week. I hope to join the gym soon as well. Is this enough exercise to help me lose weight?

I know this type of question has been asked many times, and before anyone says it, yes, I have gone over the boards and read the stickys and searched for specific TDEE/BMR information. I just want to make sure I am understanding it correctly. Thanks guys!!!

You should be including your exercise in your TDEE calculation, in which case you should not eat back exercise calories.

However, by doing your calculation as 'sedentary' and not including exercise you are effectively using TDEE the same as MFP is set up. In this case you should log your exercise and eat back the calories.
  • Iifym is going to ask you how often you exercise. Enter that number. From there it gives you your TDEE. If you want to lose weight, subtract a percentage from that number and do not add calories back when exercising.

Thanks for the quick replies! So I entered my TDEE-20% into my MFP goals, and set my macros accordingly. Now I know NOT to eat back my exercise calories.THANKS GUYS!!
