Tips for 48 yr old starting to run

Just downloaded a C25k app. Finding that I'm walking maximum pace for my short legs so need to structure some running in properly. Tend to jog along a bit aimlessly. Thing is the first couple of weeks don't look to bad but by week 3 it looks terrifying - starts off with a minute or so but very soon it wants me to run for quite a few minutes. Hmm maybe it will take longer than 9 weeks to complete. Worth mentioning I'm a nearly 49 yr old woman weighing 265 lbs so it's been a long time since I ran for more than a minute or 2 in intervals

Start slow. Like real slow. Speed will naturally come with time, really. Build your mileage slowly, no more than 10% per week to avoid injury. If your body is hurting rest it. If your body is tired rest it. Slow and steady wins the race as they say.

C25k is great, just don't try to go too fast too soon. Almost 2 yrs in, and I am 3 min per km faster than I was when I started, it was all a matter of many long slow runs, with some intervals, hills, and steady paced runs thrown in for good measure.

    Good luck...it's addictive.
