I was prescribed 10mg of adderall instant release twice a day for my ADD, and I have been looking online and a lot of people say they experience weightloss from taking adderall. what are the chances of me losing weight on this? Im 18, 5'4'' and around 125 pounds and wouldn't be too upset if i lost 5-10 pounds, but nothing too crazy! Does anyone know?

Adderall is an amphetamine, so weight loss is a possible side effect.

A 10 lb loss at your height/weight is the exact definition of "too crazy".
I was on Adderall for ten years, when I was about your age, and it really had little to no bearing on my weight. Sometimes it made me not feel hungry, but when I did eat it made me eat double to make up for the meals I missed from being cracked out on stimulants. Basically it just resulted in a starvation/gorge cycle from which I always broke even, and never gained nor lost any weight. But I was at a healthy, reasonable weight (just like you) and I wasn't trying to get unhealthily or unreasonably thin.
If you are looking to shed body fat, start lifting heavy weights. It won't change the number on the scale most likely, but you will lose inches and get better muscle definition all over.0 -
I have been on the same dosage of adderall that you have been prescribed for a little less than 4 weeks. I have lost about 15 lbs, but it is not as awesome as it seems. On the weekends, I try to not to take it at all or only one 10mg dose a day. On those days I feel like I am wanting to eat all day or as soon as the dose wears off. During the week, when I take both doses, food is completely adversive and I have to make myself eat. Some days I struggle to get in 600-700 calories. Please believe me when I say I never would have thought those words would describe me. I used to love food and would obsess over and plan my day around eating. I had gastric bypass in 2003 when I was 19 and lost 140 lbs. Slowly, about 40 lbs has crept back. But given my history, you can see how much I struggle with my relationship with food. The idea that I now have to give myself a pep talk to choke down food some days is absurd.
I try to stay away from junk and get as much nutrition as I can, but it's hard. Breakfast-sometimes half a greek yogurt (if i can even eat that) or a fiber one bar; lunch- a salad w/ grilled chicken; dinner- an apple and cottage cheese and some veggie straws. This is on a good day. I am worried that my metabolism is suffering because even though I have plenty more weight to lose (about 30 lbs) I don't seem to be losing much in the last week or so, even with the calorie deficit. Oh, and even though I have little to not desire to eat, I constantly crave coffee and cigarettes. I have always been a social smoker, but some days I can go through a whole pack (a pack used to last me 5-7 days). And I am getting large coffees from Wawa or Starbucks 2-3 times a day.
I also have concerns about when and if my doc decides to up my dose or take me off of it completely. Will my appetite and subsequent weight gain come back 10 fold due to screwing up my metabolism even more? Weight loss was't the reason I started taking adderall but I would be lying if I said the possible side effect wasn't attractive. However, I would much rather lose the weight properly to ensure long term success. Hope this is helpful.0 -
You might, I did initially. But I gained what I lost back once I got used to the medication. Amphetamines are an appetite suppressant. Something to watch out for, in my case Adderall made me not want to drink water, at all. I guess this is a pretty common among meth heads as well, as evidenced by their lovely smiles. If you notice the scale going down, factor in whether you've been drinking much water lately.
I had to force myself to drink water, and it was so hard. I eventually got my script changed to Vyvanse. It works for my ADD without the methhead-like side-effects, despite also being an amphetamine the delivery of the drug is different. It also doesn't make me be repulsed at the idea of drinking water.0 -
I feel somewhat qualified to answer this because we are very similar. I'm the same height as you, I was the same weight to a couple of weeks ago, and I also am prescribed Adderall for ADHD. Honestly, and I don't recommend this, I haven't been taking my meds (combination of it being summer, and addiction issues). However, when I do take it I lose weight. Nothing significant, I just weigh about 5-10 pounds lighter on average. It is an amphetamine so of course it can suppress your appetite, even speed up your metabolism. I find that while I take my meds I don't eat at all, but I mostly make up for that when I "come down" and am ravenous... part of the reason I'm not taking them. Everyone is different though, my brother weighs a good 20-30 pounds less on Vyvanse. Any significant drops in weight will definitely have your doctor concerned so I recommend taking weekends off (not if you are driving). I disagree that you shouldn't lose 10 or 15 pounds if you want to though. I want to because I have a smaller frame and feel my best at that weight. Just try to do it healthily and don't let it be because of your meds.0
