Getting Rid of Fluid Weight (My Working Theory)

Let me preface this by saying that I retain fluid like nobody's business and I've been on a fluid pill for years. So even if I am eating WONDERFULLY and exercising daily but going over on sodium I will lose absolutely NOTHING. It is extremely frustrating and drinking more water only makes me retain more. If I drink more than 10 glasses in one day I will gain even if I didn't go over in sodium.

Needless to say, I've been looking for SOMETHING that would help me get rid of the excess fluid on days that I have to eat out or on "cheat" days (I usually only do one cheat meal and dessert on Fridays). I think I may have found the solution! I ate a banana Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night before bed. Friday I was over on sodium BIG time and normally would have gained 3 to 5 lbs. Instead I LOST 0.4 lbs! Saturday I did really well all day and was down 3.4 more lbs. Yesterday I did okay on sodium, but still got really close to the max mark which usually results in a gain for me, but this morning I was down ANOTHER 1.4 lbs!

Do the math! In 3 days I have lost 5.2 lbs of fluid weight where normally I would have gained 2 of those 3 days! I am really starting to think the banana is the trick for me! I know they have lots of potassium and potassium is a natural diuretic so I am assuming that was all I needed! I am going to continue to test it out for the next few weeks and see if I continuously get the same results. I can't begin to tell you how big of a breakthrough this is for me! I actually have been close to giving up multiple times because of how close I have to watch my sodium intake. EVERYTHING has sodium in it, even clean foods.

Also, I like to eat the banana at night because I don't really like them and it takes any and all evening snack cravings away, which is just an added bonus! :D

Potassium helps balance sodium levels in the body to prevent excess water retention.

If you have excess sodium in your body, you need to create equilibrium in the salinity of inside and outside your cells.

One way of doing this is for the cells to lose significant amounts of water, but this is dangerous for the body and is why we are not supposed to drink large quantities of ocean water.

Another way of achieving equilibrium, is to retain more water from the water you drink so that you dilute the outside of the cell enough where the salinity is the same as the inside of a cell.

Potassium naturally offsets sodium in the body. This is done by triggering the kidneys to process more sodium.

So, you're "theory" has scientific backing.

    Wow! That's awesome!

My fiancé is on a diuretic for an inner ear issue, and her doctor has her on a prescription potassium pill to help offset the potassium leached by the diuretic. Higher potassium can definitely help.

Try it with a baked potato. If memory serves, they have even more potassium than a banana.

Yes, I know red potatoes are FULL of potassium. I think I may try that some days to mix it up some. Thanks!
