I always thought...

that a sign of good, and healthy bowels are to poop twice a day. I usually go once. I thought for sure diet and exercise woudl get me to the two a day as I am cleaning my body inside and out. I also heard extra fiber can help clean you out and was told to expect to go more often the first few days. However, this did NOT happen with me. I'm 2-3 weeks in consistently (spotty before) and have added more fruits/veggies and even fiber. However it has done the opposite for me. I actually have been constipated. More of, I just don't need to go for a good 2-3 days, then my body will decide to release it all.
On top of feeling fuller so I dnt want to eat it also makes me sluggish and just "blah" feeling. Why is this? What can I do differently? Why has increased fiber done opposite for me than what I have been told it does? I don't think I've increased my fiber intake by a ton and I have also adding exercise 5-6 days a week which also helps move things along.

Any advice or even reasoning would be greatly appreciated.

Have you increased your water? Increasing fiber is great, but keeping your body hydrated is what is needed for consistency.

I think that twice a day is quite frequent. Drinking water and exercise help bowel movements.

I started increasing water before I even started dieting. I drink NO LESS than six bottles (16.9 ozs) of water a day, and have made it all the way through 8 bottles. I also am super gassy. Even letting her rip while walking down the grocery store aisles cause I don't see it coming. My husband has pointed out how gassy I am. At this rate I just want to go back to my normal one poo a day...I'm sure I would bee less gassy if I could go. I just don't knwo whats up :-(

Per my doctor, every body is different, and the range of "normal" is from once every other day to three times per day.

Getting things to move involves fiber to bind it, hydration to keep it soft enough to move, and enough exercise to keep your body functional. However, if your body prefers fewer times, you're not likely to change it significantly.

Agree with the person that said water. If you increase your fiber intake, you have to drink more water as well. Also, fat is important. If you have cut back on your fat intake that can constipate you as well.

Have a look at your average fat intake, fat is needed as well as fiber and water to keep things moving.

When we first got our dog, the trainer told me "movement inspires movement"...in other words, if you want to potty train your dog you need to take him outside and run him around to get him to "go" before you bring him back inside. Seems to work the same for people, in my experience (well, not the pooping outside part). If I exercise regularly my system is more regular. Are you exercising?

I exercise 4-5 days a week. Most days it is a walk/jog but some days I do mix it up with the 30DS or other forms of cardio. I also do crunches, leg raises, squats, and push-ups on a daily basis (even when no cardio) to work those muscles as well.

My diary is open. feel free to go and take a look and see if you notice anything!

I checked your diary and can tell you those Fiber One bars can be rough. If you're having trouble with gas and constipation I'd cut those out. Otherwise I'm not seeing so many fruits and veggies that should be causing any issues.

Sounds like you've got exercise well covered then! I'm no doctor so please keep that in mind, but I looked through a week or so of your diary and maybe you should be getting more raw fruits and veggies? And I agree with Erin, those Fiber One bars affect my system very badly (but with the opposite effect than the one you're suffering from). I also saw a lot of processed food, which I don't consider bad, but if you're trying to locate the source of the problem maybe you could take a look at that aspect? And water, water, water. :) Hope you feel better very soon!

I don't know where you got 2X a day from - everyone is different - provided that you don't feel bunged up and bloated and are eating healthily your body will sort itself out - back ache can sometimes be an indicator of constipation. Whether you are a 2X a week person or 1x per day, you will not do yourself any favours by trying to encourage more frequent motions. Drink enough fluids, eat a sensible balance of fibre - and a reasonable amount of naturally occurring fats - exercise regularly and let your body do it's thing. The developed world worries far too much about its bowels!

    Edit - typos

Yup, try getting your fiber from natural sources like fruits and veggies and quit the Fiber One bars. They're tasty but are probably the reason behind your gas issues.

Normal pooping can be anywhere between 3 per week to 3 per day.

once a day is the norm. High fiber can definitely cause constipation especially is your body in not accustom to it. Drink lots of water, make sure you have some good fats and a bit of probiotics (yogurt ect) and maybe cut down on the fiber and slowly increase to find the sweet spot.

Did you hear this from a doctor? If you are doing everything right and you are pooping just once, then perhaps that is the norm for you.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. :)

Welcome to my world! Every 2-3 days is my norm. I wish it wasn't. However, short of chugging LARGE amounts of laxatives daily, that's just the way I am. Although, a good long run usually produces some good "results." LOL.

    Water....lots of it helps.

I think that twice a day is quite frequent. Drinking water and exercise help bowel movements.

    I agree with this totally.

Also, everyone's body is a little different in this area. I find that getting too much fiber actually causes problems for me (constipation), especially if I eat a lot of baby spinach, arugula, and/or apples. Quinoa does it to me, too. I have to eat those items in smaller amounts and with a lot of other foods in order to avoid this problem. I also find that when I don't eat enough fats (including healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, etc) I have trouble in this area.

Once a day is my norm and "goal" I might even call it. But midway through my weight loss (I've lost around 120 lb) I had a couple of months where I was BADLY constipated, only going about twice a week and really uncomfortable...I thought it would help me to eat lots more fiber, and it made the problem MUCH worse (especially the baby spinach, which I was eating tons of).

    Good luck, OP.

    Hello,

I just read this tread now.
I was also a "once a day regular", and 15 days ago I changed my lifestyle to a more healthier one.
I now go every 2 days more often then every day...
But, I increased my protein intake, and cut sodium and sugar.
I went to see your Diary, and girl, you need to cut the processed food, that's full of bad fat, and your fiber should come from fruit and vegetables and not those sugary cereal bars.
Also, pay attention to the sauces...those should be only once a week. Olive oil is so much healthier

If you workout in the morning, you don't need a cereal bar, eat a banana instead, and just if you really need it... I only have breakfast after the morning exercise and shower, cause that way I'm burning the fat that its stored, and usually after exercising it's when my bowel decides to woke up...
In the beginning of 30DS all that jumping around was great for the "gas situation".
Fell free to add me if you want.

Edited to add that I used to drink 1,5liters (50oz) water a day and now I drink 2liters (68oz).
Besides water the other drinks I have are natural juices, that I squeeze myself at home

    Kisses,
    Tatyanne

I peeked through your diary, most days you're getting around 10g-15g of fiber. Try aiming for 25g a day.

Those Fiber One bars are miserable, but try the cereals instead. I have never had a problem eating the cereal.

There are also high-fiber low-carb tortilla wraps (Ole Xtreme Wellness, 9g fiber each), high fiber breads (I like Healthy Life, 5g fiber for 19g carbs) & english muffins (Thomas brand, my fav, 8g of fiber each).

Once a day keeps me happy. If I'm lucky I might go twice.

I find I need quite a lot of "bulk" to keep things regular and the best foods for me are Weetabix, lentils, beetroot, roasted peppers & onions, sweet corn, peas, sweet potatoes and beans. I try to eat at least one of these a day. If I overdose on nuts that usually helps too but is a high cal solution. Today I've managed to fit in sweet corn, butternut squash, baked beans plus some other fruit & veg... I am however used to a fairly high fibre diet. Some people can't tolerate so much.

As others have mentioned, keep drinking too.

I was wondering this myself. If I eat very low cal (1200-1300) for a couple days, I'll go the entire time without pooping. As soon as I start eating 1500-1600, I'll go back to my normal pooping 2-3 times per day. My macros are the same regardless of how many cals I eat, so idk what the issue is. Is it really just less food=less poop?

I'm the same. I need an absolute minimum of 1400 to guarantee a daily poop and I must have fibre/bulk. Too much protein also stops the train for me, as does too much junk/processed food. Fibre is the way forward. Constipation, however mild, puts me in a bad mood.

Like others already mentioned, I actually don't really see much fiber in your diary?? 25 grams total is recommended for the average person and you should be getting that through mostly fruits/vegetables. If you're not used to eating fiber and you suddenly incorporate it, that will affect your digestive system. Incorporate it slowly and eventually try to reach up to 25 grams. However, do not eat too much because that can also cause constipation.

I noticed others have mentioned this. For me, eating too much protein also affects my regularity. So I suggest you try to follow your macro nutrient ratio as much as possible for a balanced diet, incorporate more variety of healthy vegetables and fruits high in both fiber and water content in every meal, continue to drink lots of water, and also cut down sodium (which helps with reducing bloating).

For example, you can have fruit with your oatmeal in the morning. Adding seeds and nuts to your oatmeal will also boost the fiber content! For lunch, you can eat carrots or other vegetables with your main protein/fat source. For dinner, try to cook for yourself (so you'll know exactly how much fiber/sodium is in it!) and include things like different types of beans. For snacks, whole fruit smoothies (with either almond milk or water) is also really good. You can grind up flaxseeds/chia seeds before blending up the fruits and that gives you lots of fiber too. My diary is always full of fiber; have a look to see what kind of whole foods I eat to stay regular!
