ETA: Thoretically, what he's suggesting is true: Eating ice does burn calories because your body needs to war up the ice before it can digest it. I learned this from reading up on long distance/year-round cycling. when drinking a sports drink in the winter, you need to add a bit more powder to it, because you need the extra calories from warming up the drink.
However, I don't think that eating ice every day will make a significant difference to losing weight.

Sadly someone is going to try it.
ETA to say that ice is very hard on your teeth's enamel. And everyone and their mama has a gimmick. Herbalife has a tea that "burns 100 calories just by drinking it" because it raises your body's temperature. Seriously, can someone just come out and say eat at a deficit??0 -
Ice is made of water. There is nothing there to digest.0

Their breakfast consists of a sausage cheese and egg crescount (prob spelled wrong ha) and lunch half plate of fries and a full salami n cheese panani.........

oh brother! :noway: I sometimes chew on ice but it's because of my anemia. have for YEARS and it NEVER made me lose weight! it wasn't until I started eating healthy and working out when IIII began to lose weight... :drinker:

Eating ice seems pretty rough for anyone with cavities or sensitive teeth. Maybe it makes you lose weight cause then your teeth hurt too much to eat food...0

This is about as logical as saying chewing gum helps you lose weight. Cuz ya know, chewing is like strength training...for your mouth. And you could totally burn off a bad diet by just chewing gum. Come ooooooooon! *face palm0

I don't really like cold drinks, and I'm overweight.
Yup, study proven. Cold = weight loss. I will never be a healthy weight, because my body doesn't get to burn those few extra calories from ice. I'm going to start freezing all the water in my house, those last 15-20 pounds will melt off.0 -

OK gotta jump in on this eating ice thing.
Not gonna get into the bad for the teeth thing or the water has zero Calories thing. I'm only going to look at the physics / math in it.
calorie = amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree C
Calorie = 1000 calories
To raise ice 1 degree C it only takes .5 calories per gram
To melt ice it takes 79 calories per gram
I'm going to guess that a typical ice cube would maybe be one fluid ounce of water which would weigh approximately 30 grams.
Lets do the math assuming that the cube of ice is a bit below freezing (0 C) and is -5 C.
To heat the ice to 0 C we do the following:
30 grams * .5 calories/gram * 5 degrees = 15 calories
To convert the ice (solid) to water (liquid) at 0 C
30 grams * 79 calories/gram = 2370 calories
To heat the water to body temperature
30 grams * 1 calorie/gram * 37 degrees = 1110 calories
Add all of these calories up and you get 3635 calories which would then be 3.635 Calories.
Now lets say it takes 3500 Calories to lose 1 lb of weight.
That would mean that we would have to eat about 963 ice cubes to lose 1 lb.
Now if I was to eat 1 ice cube per minute it would only take me 16 hours to lose a pound.
Now if I look at my exercising that I'm doing lately I'm burning about 400 calories per half hour. I could do the same thing by exercising for 4 hours.
So what do I want to do? Eat ice cubes for 16 hours or exercise for 4.0 -

What would work better is telling people to run around naked outside when its cold: you would need to increase your aerobic activity substantially to keep warm (more than warming up a mall amount of ingested ice), and if you dont, you get sick and then spend calories fighting a virus and throwing up with loss of appetite: weight loss win/win! Makes about as much sense and is much more certain to get you to lose weight...yeah don't try this one either though...0

I chew ice all the time (to the point where I have a fracture on my front tooth) and anemia and I've never been able to figure out why I crave it?
If you know, I'd love to hear why I do this?

So, you would probably die from water poisoning / overdose. In that case the weight wouldn't matter anyway.

I don't need no fancy science to tell me that cold doesn't make people losing weight. I just lived through one of the coldest winters I can remember and I'm still fat. If cold made people lose weight, we'd all be deathly skinny here in Boston.0 -

I would have done the numbers, but I didn't know what any of them were. All I knew is that I knew the theory was correct, just unrealistic int he real world.
The dude (Dr. Weiner. :laugh:) says you should drink 1L of crushes iec an hour. That's 1kg of ice a day. By your numbers, if you were eating at maintenance, it would take 29 days to burn 1 lb of fat that way.0 -

One thing on this is that your body is craving Oxygen and it can get it from the ice. Just something I read on google.0 -
The effects would be minimal.
1 L of ice (or 1 L of water) is 1 kg. It takes one (large or dietary) calorie to raise 1 kg of water 1 degree C. Water freezes at 0 C and average human body temperature is 37 C. Congratulations, you've found a way to burn an extra 40 calories or so.
Seriously, go for a short walk, you'll probably burn more.0 -
