Why does my weight increase?

Hi- I am relatively new to this and have searched for information and through the forums for advice, but I am just going to ask my own question as well. Yesterday, I was in the heat all day, about 88 degrees outside, I only drank about 48 ounces of water, but I also had some other liquids as well. I ate under my calorie goal by 100 and I also worked out, but for some reason I gained weight on the scale- now, I KNOW I did not eat 3500 calories over so I am not really "stressed out" at all, just curious about the gain. Do you have any reasons why the scale would go up?

Most likely water weight. Check your sodium from yesterday.

Water - drink more today - and see what happens tomorrow.

Not drinking enough water, eating a lot of sodium the day before, etc. Water weigh is perfectly normal and will go away. Sometimes working out causes your muscles to retain water as well.

Definitely need to drink more water. When you're in that kind of heat and you don't replace your water the body holds on to its water stores... it's a survival thing.

    How is your sodium?

I had 3,261mg of sodium yesterday. I do NOT normally have this much- could this affect it? I will try to drink more water today!

sodium always effects how much water you retain, so yes.

When did you weigh yourself? Are you weighing every day as your weight can change upwards of 5 pounds a day through normal stresses. Monitoring it too closely and too often if you can't mentally handle these fluctuations is a way to drive yourself mad.

Often times if you are in the heat for an excessive period of time, and you do not hydrate appropriately, your body will hold onto whatever water/hydration it is getting, which causes "weight gain".

You definitely should look at your sodium levels too.....

Basically what everyone else has said. Drink more water, eat a low sodium diet (as low as you can make it) for two days or so, drink some coffee (it's a mild diuretic) But it's not a big deal. Your body will self regulate unless you have blood pressure problems or swelling in the feet.

I've had the same sort of thing happen. You are right not to worry about it.

I had a hard three hour bike ride in the heat, during which I drank a liter of water and a liter of sports drink. The next morning I weighed three pounds more than the morning before the ride. I'm no physiologist (obviously) but I'm guessing the sodium and potassium in the sports drink and the intense sweating caused my body to retain as much fluid as possible not only during the ride but from everything I ate and drank the rest of that day.

The fluid weight was gone in a couple of days.

(Not precisely on topic, but related: When I get a huge calorie burn like from a long hard ride, I get absolutely no weight loss from it. The weeks I have a ride like that I get the same weight loss as the weeks I don't. Not a problem, though...the ride was for fitness, the food is for weight loss.)
