Is it better to have a protein shake before or after your workout?

Whenever you want. Timing is irrelevant. Also, if you're getting your protein goal from other sources, protein shakes are unneeded as well. They are pretty convenient to those who are on the go a lot though Meal timing is only relevant to the individual. Eat whenever makes you feel best.0

I have always heard and have always drank them after a workout. It's pretty important to get some sort of protein in your system not too long after you workout ... so even some lean meat like chicken is always good too.0

It really doesn't matter.0 -
I have mine for breakfast because during the work week that is all I have time for. It keeps me full for several hours. I am new to working out but I dont think it matters what time you take your shake. I havent had any issues with mine in the morning. (I work out at 7pm)0

If you're so certain, please provide references.0 -

Alan Aragon
"Studies show muscles’ elevated sensitivity to protein lasts at least 24 hours, says Aragon. In fact, one 2012 review study by McMaster University showed that muscle protein synthesis may continue for 24 to 48 hours post-workout. “The effect is higher immediately after exercise and diminishes over time, but that certainly doesn’t imply a magical window closes after an hour,” says Aragon. That means, theoretically you would want to eat protein right away—but because there’s not a huge post-exercise drop off in muscle protein synthesis, you don’t have to rush to pound a protein shake. "
It goes on to say total protein intake for the day is more important.

If you like having a shake before or after, do so. If not, just make sure you're getting enough protein throughout the day0 -
I get a little nauseous if I drink it before a workout. And I make mine tasty so I always look forward to having it at the end. And as better educated people have already said -- it doesn't matter.0

I would say depends. If you are working out right after waking up or right after getting off work and your tummy is already grumbling, do it before. If you are feeling fine beforehand and have a nice long cool down period after your workout and feel like doing it then, go for it.
I have one in the morning after my workout (and after I drink plenty of water) before I jump in the shower. It's basically my breakfast.0
