Here's the 411... My mother has moved in with us and lets just say I'm the only one that is trying to watch what I eat and make a difference in my lifestyle. I'm not really the primary cook in the familiy either. Tonight dinner was a whole lotta carbs, red meat and creamy sauces.

I had a little bit of it so not to offend but then made a huge salad with chicken. But now I'm still way under my calories for the day (Sunday's alwasy get thrown off because of my church schedule)

Any ideas on how I can "urge" better eating habits. I can't always make another meal because I don't want what's prepared. We live on a single income and our budget is pretty tight as it is!

Any suggestions are welcome!

Also feel free to add me, the more support the better I say!

Encourage but dont pressure...it would be no different then them badgering you about eating healthy...I suggest just taking control of your own portions no matter what they cook you can eat it BUT you must stay within portions ..try having a bag of fresh spinach and some yummy nuts and dressing and yogurt on hand always when you arent really sure of the caloric count of whats prepared you can turn to that.
  • - always have a salad on the side
    - cook as many meals as you can

Offer to take turns cooking. On your day to cook, cook a light meal but make enough left overs for the next day. Then when it is her day to cook you eat light the rest of the day and save calories for her meal. If it doesn't work out you can eat your left overs.

It is your mom, and if you tell her what your goals are and why you are doing whay you are doing, she shouldn't get offended. We know in the real world that may not work, but if she gets offended it's her issue not yours.

When you know better you do better. You know better and that is what you are trying to do.

Best wishes! Stay strong. You'll need and we will be here for you.
  • Healthy meals can also be family friendly and filling and they will please your mother. I recommend HUGE batches of lentil chili with all kinds of veggies - celery, onion, carrots, cilantro -

First of all it's cheap. REALLY cheap. Plus if you want you can just dice up some ham and throw it into the rest of the family's meal.

You can add it to whole wheat pasta and it's another meal. It makes a TON, and is very low in fat and high in protein and good everything.

No, you don't have to tip - my advice is free. =D hehe
