One of the best things to start off with, in my opinion, is doing cardio on an elliptical trainer. It's very low impact and you can go at a pace that is comfortable for you. Try using a machine that has moving arms so that you can engage your entire body. These are vey popular and you'll find them at any gym.

    Good luck!!

I agree with sweetheart. Go at your own pace with a low impact exercise. Good luck

Elliptical will have zero impact on your knees since you are not lifting and planting your feet. Def. the way to go I think. It will give you the most calorie burn for your time as well. If you can do that a couple times a week for at least half an hour or so, you should see results with along with watching your calories. Eventually building up to longer than half hour too........
  • How about swimming or aqua-aerobics - very good if you suffer from joint or back problem. Walking is good too - add in a few spurts of brisk walking. Good luck and don't give up!

  • The toughest part is just starting... with bad knees and a bad back, just start walking and increasing your distant everyday!!!! Then, next week jog as far as you can, then walk and jog and walk. Your kness will not like this, but push forward and you will see them get better!
  • All great ideas......thanks.once i get enough money to afford a membership......i want to dothose.any ideas for a broke big girl? Lol

you dont need a membership to the great outdoors.....there have to be parks with walking trails in your area....a mall???
just start walking.....we all walk to get from place to place just add some more steps.....start small...10 mins a day, to the end of your street, to the mailbox and back a few times.....build up and go further next week.....then further the next day......you will be amazed how far you will go once you start.....also if you have access to a pool swimming is good for low impact workouts......find some people on here and friend them....get support and just keep moving.....
good luck with your journey....we have all been right where you are....just get started...
  • And hey.....walking is free

Sometimes just moving is the ticket. Try a dvd for your home that you can use to get you up and moving. Amazon has tons of DVD's. That's what I use, because a gym membership just wasn't paying for itself for me. I work late several nights a week since my husband is in med school, so I can come home and still grab a 30 min workout. A few ones to try to get you moving would be the throwback sweatin to the oldies dvd's. They are fun and pretty low impact. You can go at your own pace, pause if you need to for a drink of water or break, and get back into it. A friend of mine did that until she felt confident enough and had lost some weight before she tried the Jillian Michaels dvd's. I just got her 30 day shred video and we are going to start it together. Good luck!
  • Swimming is the best route to take if you have bad joints. Good Luck!!!
  • I'm right there with you. I was 247 a week ago (5' 5") and now I'm at 242. Try walking, swimming, dancing ... find what is comfortable and then go past your comfort zone. When you think you're about to fall over, just go 10 more seconds. The important thing is to get moving, get your heart rate up and get your metabolism going.

Good luck. You can do it!
