You'll never want to buy apple sauce again...

I was having friends over for dinner, making homemade pot pies. I wanted something for sides that would be easy to make & could be made ahead. I found an Alton Brown recipe for 10 minute apple sauce that looked really easy. I altered the recipe a bit, for our dietary needs (some vegans) and tastes (bourbon, not brandy!). It came out amazingly good. People were going back for second & third helpings of apple sauce! It was so easy to make and so good, I don't think I'll ever buy apple sauce again.
10 Minute Apple Sauce
3 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored & quartered
3 Fuji apples, peeled, cored & quartered
1 cup unfiltered apple juice (I used organic Apple Cider, because that's what I had on hand)
2-3 tablespoons maple syrup (or agave)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
In a sealable microwave-safe container, combine apples with all other ingredients. Close lid, leaving on corner of lid open to allow steam to escape. Microwave on high for 10 minutes.
Using a hand blender or potato masher, blend to desired consistency. Serve hot immediately or chill for later use.
Makes about 8 - 1 cup (85 calorie) servings, depending on the size of your apples.

LOL, thank goodness this was a recipe....My first impressions from your title was that I was about to read an article about the horrors found in a commercial applesauce press operation. I buy unsweetened applesauce for my kids all the time, I was a little worried
I'll have to try your recipe now, my kids love applesauce!0 -
Thank you! BUMP:flowerforyou:0

I had forgotten about homemade applesauce. I used to do that for my kids when they were little.....just blend up regular food and give it to them. It tastes so much better than store-bought and is much healthier - for them and us! Thanks for the reminder!0

lol i thought when i read the topic that you were gonna tell some inside information about how disgusting conditions are inside an applesauce making factory...i was wrong...thank goodness lol0

Whew... another one here glad this wasn't a commercial applesauce horror story. The recipe looks good (and easy!) and I'll definitely have to try it soon. I'll still be buying the commercial though just because it lasts longer (which probably isn't a good thing except it makes it a good substitution for oil to keep on hand for baking!)0

Opps, maybe I should have thought more about the topic title! :laugh:0

I'm gonna give this a try, except maybe with spiced rum instead of bourbon.0

That's similar to what I made y'day! I had some apples that needed to be used up.
I used about 10 apples (mix of Fuji and Granny smith, that's what I had)
3/4 cup pure apple juice
1 tsp. vanilla/ 1 tsp. cinnamon/ 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
I just sliced the apples (left the peel on) and microwaved for 10-12 minutes. Then I pureed in the blender to desired consistency and added a little more cinnamon and nutmeg.
My kids LOVE when I make homemade apple sauce!0
