How many calories?

How long do you workout for daily? How many calories do you burn? I just see alot of people saying they burn around 500 calories per workout. What are you doing to burn that much and for how long?

Today at the gym I did the treadmill for 30 minutes at 3.5mph at an incline of 4-6. I only burned 220 calories?????? Should I be making my workouts longer? More intensity?

for me it takes 45 min I do the elliptical I can get to 500 or sometimes over but somedays under. If you are working out in a gym you should be doing some weight training.
  • when i do my daily thing, i usually workout for about 30 minutes, on the treadmill i walk at 3.5 with incline at 12, and on the elliptical i have it set at 14 difficulty, and on weight loss course..... i usually burn a lot more on the elliptical, because i can really push myself on it- it doesn't hurt my knees like the treadmill does.... that being said i usually burn somewhere between 300 and 600 calories, depending on how hard i push myself... i would say if you really want to burn more calories, maybe step up the intensity a lil or even just do it for 15 extra minutes.... wish i could be more help, but there are others on here that can give better advice:ohwell: good luck though:smile:

I don't have a whole lot of time to workout, but I usually get in about an hour/hour and a half 6 days a week. I go straight to the gym from work. It really depends on the day for me me. Mondays and Wednesdays, I see a trainer who, I could almost swear, is trying to kill me. But she teaches me something new every week (strength training) so I like it. Most days, I start out with walking a mile around the track or 30min get on the treadmill (level 3.0-3.5), so that's 100 calories burned (no incline 'cuz it hurts my left shin really bad). Then I burn most of my calories on the elliptical (level 3 for 35 min.) - that's about 320 calories burned right there. If I have time, I'll get on the bike for another 30min (12 - 13) and that's another 150 or something calories. So that's a full 1.5 hours on a good day.

I personally think it's more about the intensity not the time. There are a couple machines that I can do and burn 100 calories in 10 minutes because of the intensity level. Just my two cents...

I do really like the elliptical. Maybe I will do 30 min on the treadmill and 15 or so on the elliptical. Thanks!

I do some weights but not alot. I just use the hand ones by myself at home...too shy to go over and use the big stuff at the gym....:blushing:

My work out regimen consist of ....20 mins on the Tread Climber at 3.7....300 calories.
Or I do the treadmill if I'm not able to do that..with an incline at about 12 as well and at 3.8, I burn about 200 calories, then I jog at 4.7 for 2 miles...including my cool down for about five or so minutes and that's about 200 calories. Not including my strength training, about 3 machines..either back, arms or shoulders.... So I'm at the Gym for about 1hr and 25/30 minutes. Hope this helps:happy:

Wow! Ok I think I just need to build up my length of time at the gym....you guys kick butt!
  • Hi ChubbyMom, or should I say hot and sexy mom. I will get you to change your name sooner or later. ha ha ha:wink::tongue:
Mmmm, when I am just doing my regular workout, stretching, pushups, kicks, punches and general stuff, it is about 45 minutes, but I don't think I am burning so much as toning. I think it is more of a core work out to lift the butt and stuff and maybe a little strangth also. This morning I was shocked when I did 8 push up on my toe tips. I usually am on my knees girl style, but for some reason I just thought I could do it and did. This is usually on days I don't run, but I still do a good 5-10 minute warm up with the same stuff, just shorter for my runs.
Now when I run, it is usually at least an hour and like today was for 75 minutes and I burned 811 calories. Running for me is a great sweat workout, and something I can keep doing for a long time without getting board, unless it is the treadmill then I get board and am lucky if I do it for 45 minutes and burn 4-500 calories.
When you find something you can really do and do well for a long time, stick with it. Push yourself. Ad 5 minutes each time. It is great how one thing helps another without even thinking about it. And while I haven't done the eliptical, I heard it is a great work out with being to hard on the body? Enjoy.
    Chat later.

I run for 60 minutes and that burns a lot of calories (6.0-6.8 intervals) -- 600 or so
Spin class... still can't get a good read on it but websites say 450-600 depending on intensity
Strongly suggest Circuit training for minimal time and max calorie burn:
something like 11 calories a minute (average)!! So, 45 would get you over 450

Good luck at finding what works for you!!

I basically just take classes at the gym, I cannot run on a treadmill or work out on an elliptical, I get way too bored and just quit. Typically, I get in 5 times per week: 2 Spin classes (550), 2 circuit classes (550), and 1 step class (500). Each is an hour.

when I'm at home I do an hour on the ski machine and then 1/2 hour with weights working a different muscle group each time but I consistently do legs and the abs each day. I try to cut a larger area around the house with the push mower each week but the rest of the fields I need to use the tractor.

When I'm on the road I do an hour on the bike, a half hour on the eliptical and if there are free weights available I will spend about 20 minutes with them.

I don't trust the machines to give me an accurate count of calories unless they're brand new but I do use the calculations as a guide to my eating habits and I try not to eat them all each day.

If you do increase your work outs do it gradually so that you build yourself up to the right level of exercise and don't cause an injury that would put you out of the gym until you heal and causing you to lose interest and incentive. Don't try to do what everyone else does because what many of us have done is built up our stamina in our workouts over several months or a couple of years.

Pay attention to what your body tells you it can do and don't work past a pain.

As usual, bang on advice! Don't just say "I'm not doing enough" and kill yourself from the gate. I increased my workouts by five minutes a week, from a starting point of five minutes on the treadmill (all I could accomplish my first time). Keep moving and improving, but do it slowly, or you may burn out entirely or injure yourself.

Also, if your means at all allow it, I strongly suggest a few sessions with a trainer to learn how to not be intimidated by the weights. I stayed on the cardio side of the gym for far too long. Now, after just a few sessions, I know how to use all of the mysterious machines and actually like weight training. And, my body is starting to show it! (hooray!):flowerforyou:

I love going for bike rides, I have the cutest pink cruzer and I am going to go out today to see what kinf of calories I really burn with my HRM I just got. I always wondered because the first half it mostly up hill grade, so it is a good work out, but then it is almost a coast on the way back, but I peddle anyway to burn calories. Now I will see it if works.

Well I went to the gym this morning. I did the elliptical first. 15 minutes...upped my intensity...burned 150 calories. Then to the elliptical...upped my resistance just a tad burned 100 in 15 minutes...oh and did an incline. I think slow and steady does it. Maybe I will look into some of the classes at the gym....Thanks for all the advice!
