Walking and elevation.. How I bit more than I could chew

So for my walk today I felt like changing scenery. I plotted a nice route for myself using google maps, somewhere I've never been to before. I wanted it nice and straight on what looked like a nicely paved road on the map. I was in a great mood and wanted everything to be perfect! Getting lost in an unfamiliar area would ruin things. So, shoes on, heart monitor on, and off to the perfect walk.

Little did I know that cursed route had 13.5% degree grade average half way forward with small patches over 40%! I'm not ready for that kind of challenge yet! But halfway in the middle of nowhere, I could either walk back or finish it. I chose to finish it, maybe it's just a small distance and would level out eventually. NOP! It was that bad up to the last meter. Completely out of breath, soaking wet and feeling like I was about to die I had to make my way back. Some places were so steep I slipped and fell and barely made it back home. So much for my "perfect walk"

Does any of you know an app (android) or a website that would help me pre-plan a route while being able to see elevation and grade?

I don't have any recs, but I think it's awesome that you were able to do the walk period!

Runkeeper allows you to plot out a route, and shows any elevation changes, but not until after you plot and save the route. Then you can see the elevation changes underneath the map.

I'm pretty sure MapMyRun does this (and I'm positive MapMyRide does), and you can preplan. You can also look up routes other people have saved by location and distance.
