On a medical diet and doing personal training-gained weight

Hi I've been obsessed with this and reading every article possible about working out slowing down weight loss. I am actually kind of depressed. So I am on a medical diet and they track lbs losses. but I figure I needed to put in working out, but I won't work out without a trainer (cause I hate the gym) and also I wanted to start working out cause I can't always be on a medical diet.
Without the workout I lose about 1-2 lbs a week (sometimes 4 lbs a week). but after starting working out I either gain 1-2 lbs or stay the same. I read all these articles about muscles and stuff (but I only started working out this week) so that can't be it.
Secondly I only eat within the medical diet, so no sweets or extra food. I stick to the diet after i work out. What;s up. Do I need to stop working out for the weight loss to kick start again? I only do personal training twice a week for 1 hour. So that's only 2 hours a week... is the exercise hindering my weight loss?

Most likely, it's just water weight. If you're new to working out, and especially if you do something challenging, the body sort of freaks out at the new "stress" and retains water, which it uses to keep your body safe and to respond to the effects of the workout. Give it a couple more weeks, and you should see the weight coming off again.
Also, you don't have to go to the gym to work out. There are videos you can do, or you can just go for walks or bike rides, or go swimming. Anything that gets you up and moving is a good start.0 -
It is possible the workouts are slowing your progress depending on what type of diet you are on, your diary is not public so I have no idea what your food intake looks like. However, when I worked in a weight loss center we prescribed very specific food plans and found people had more success when they first focused on getting to a lean body weight and then started up a workout routine once they went into maintenance. What was the recommendation on working out from where you got your diet?0

When you start a new form of exercise your body retains water. You can still be losing fat but you don't see it on the scale. Be patient and give it a few more weeks.
Make sure your doctor is okay with you working out. Some medical diets discourage exercise.0 -
Well the doctor did say exercise wasn't needed. But minimal would do. However I was on the medical diet and there were no losses for about a few weeks. So I got a trainer thought that would help. Also I thought I should be more active.
Really exercise can slow weight lost?0 -
Strict adherence to the medical diet is the most important step, I am not saying don’t exercise at all but don’t go over the top with it, I would say save your money with the trainer and go to them once you have lost the weight.
Yes it can slow the process on a medical diet; I have seen it a lot. Those diets are designed around people who are not currently exercising so often times you are working with opposing forces. Especially if the diet is fairly low calorie you will lose at a slower pace with high intensity workouts. At the very least make sure you tell the doctor what your workouts look like because they are basing things on minimal to no working out, if you plan to continue the training they should adjust your diet accordingly.0 -
I already bought 10 sessions and used 2. I was wondering for things like going on a trip for 2 weeks and I know I wont be on the diet cause there's no way I can cook my own food being on the go (2 days in a country) can i do training after that non diet week? just to get rid of the euro trip binge?0

With a new workout routine you're body will store more water weight to repair muscles, it's temporary, so the losses will continue.

What is the medical diet and how many calories per day?0

If you plan on being off plan I would workout more during your off-plan week. The problem with working out heavily and being on a medical weight loss plan is it’s designed to be so precise that creating large calorie deficits can be counter intuitive. Working out on the week you plan on not sticking to the diet makes more sense.
PS: If you do plan to be off plan for a week expect a fairly big gain when you get back (it can come back off pretty quickly but a gain will happen if that's your game plan).0 -
No need to do the euro trip binge -- just eat like a European!
it's hard to resist all the bread and pastries, but just think how good you'll feel when you come back from Europe *not* having gained. Enjoy an occasional treat but try to keep logging and don't stuff yourself.
One week isn't enough time to decide if exercise is slowing your weight loss. Finish the sessions you bought and then like someone said, figure out something you like to do to get you moving. Walk, swim, bike... Exercise doesn't have to be torture! If you hate the gym you're not going to go and you're going to feel guilty about it...why put yourself through that?
Hang in there and be patient.

yes I am planning being off plan end of this month for a week to Italy then after that maybe personal train twice to balance out the italy week. then the second week of July 2 weeks Euro tripping it (then put in the remaining personal training after that) then back to the medical diet. and by that time I won't feel guilty not using the personal training stuff and it'll help with me being off the diet. I KNOW I will be eating massively enjoying every country's feasts! So ok, got it. For now just push the workouts to weeks I am off diet. And when I am 100% on diet will not workout. Ok thanks a lot for the help!!
Thanks a lot everyone!!!0 -
Hi Sabina, I am going to eat for 2 weeks for sure, it's so hard when you're wlaking down the street and see gelato, crepes, paella other snacks and get them haha. Plus me and the hubby love eating it's our thing being foodies and all so the weight gain is so very possible. So i'll cram in the training after the euro trip to use those excess fats/carbs what have you into fuel to perdsonal train. haha0

Last time I went to Europe I *lost* weight. You can still enjoy the local dare but you don't have to gorge on it! Be mindful of what you're eating!0 -
