Cut off jeans and sweats...........

Again, I am a self proclaimed idiot. It's true. I cannot deny it. But a funny thing happened the other day. My daughter, who is 9 years old and very physical, burns through her jeans and sweats faster than I can buy them. All the knees have holes. So I do the sensible thing. I take a pair of scissors and turn them into cut offs. Now, I told my daughter we should take them to grandma to hem them because they do look.....well.......like someone took a pair of jeans and cut them.

Anyways, she comes home yesterday and says, kids at school think we do not have money because of the jeans. Now, I can understand that as I told her they needed to be hemmed. But kids are cruel.

Has anyone else ever had that kind of reaction to unhemmed cutoffs that you sent your kids off to school with? :drinker:

I'm not sure how fashionable this is but I usually cut them off a bit long (just at or slightly above the knee) then roll up the ends a couple times so you can't see the fraying. No hemming really needed. This can also help if your scissor skills aren't so great - if the cut off is a bit crooked some precise folding can even things out. You could always use fabric tape or a safety pin to keep them in place if that's a problem.

Cut the jeans off a tad too long and neatly roll them up one or two rolls. Hem the roll with a needle and thread and they look as good as anything you buy in the store. I had a girlfriend in highschool with shorts like this and she looked great in them. The important thing is that they can't look like you cut them with scissors. Either the edges are frayed and worn or you roll them up and make it neat.

Sweats. No. Just no. You can't wear cut off sweats to school. Also, kids are cruel.

We're in a different world today where things need to be bought and not used secondhand or hemmed. I would say ignore it, shag the ends of her shorts instead, create a little stress to them, and tell her to tell the kids that it's all the rage even the Kardashians are wearing shorts like these and she got them at American Eagle...they'll leave her alone.

I would not send your child to school in denim shorts anymore...... They are no longer socially acceptable. :drinker:

Cut offs are fine if they look like they were bought that way. They need to be frayed or hemmed.

Cut off sweats can be used at home only.

My daughter has cut off most her jeans (pisses me off cause they were not too short or worn)
Nobody has said anything, infact they are asking their moms to do the same.

Though you must fray the ends to make it look like they are worn. Cause apparently that is the cool thing to do.

Cut off sweats...not so much. I guess if you hem them?

FYI, she shouldn't be wearing them while you do this.

Buy her expensive shoes to offset the consensus that you don't have money.

If she has a Dolce & Gabbana or a Valentino purse the other girls will be jealous no matter how bad her clothes are. Of course then that means they'll talk about her even more. "She probably stole it." Jr. high and high school girls use any and every difference to talk chit about each other. It's just in their nature.
