Eating less than 1200 calories

I can't get myself to eat my recommended amount. For the whole time I've been on this site (since the end of Dec 2010), I been eating around 700-1000 calories on average. Now I've been getting serious stomach pains but I can't get myself to eat. If I eat anything I feel like throwing up and it's really hard to force myself to eat. How do I fix this? I want to be healthier but every time I try to eat I feel like throwing up.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Maybe when you eat you could add more caloricly dense foods such as legumes or beans, so you still feel as though your eating the same amount because it looks like a similar portion, but your getting more calories in one sitting. Also you could add more fiber to your diet to get your digestive track back in order. Just some thoughts, hope this helps. :) good luck

Maybe try a protein shake or something you can drink like a powerade or something. Your body needs more nutrients.
  • Maybe you should see your doctor.

Has this been happening for a long time? Maybe you need to see your doctor to find out what is going on?!? I know that it is unhealthy to eat less that 1,000 calories (at least that is what I have read)...I think you should make sure that there are not other issues going on before moving forward.

My opinion, your body needs AT LEAST 1200 to properly function, and that's if you don't exercise.

If you have pains in your stomach and feel like you are going to throw up all the time, I'd consult with a doctor.

Take it slow--there's no point in eating more if you're just puking it up, right? cheerbabe has the right idea... start with calorie dense foods (peanut butter and an apple works well for me when I need to up my calories) in small amounts and work your way up to 1200. If it continues for a while (say, until Feb), you should really see a doctor, 'cause you don't want to mess with your GI tract too much. Hang in there!

    Woops... double-post. :blushing:
  • you should definetly see a doctor. it is NOT normal to feel like throwing up when you try to eat. If this is a physical problem it needs to be addressed. if you have an eating disorder it also needs to be addressed before it gets worse and you end up really unhealthy.

Definately get to a dr asap.
    You must be wasting away?

I'd be getting a protein shake into me in between meals for now.

Are you drinking much water? This could also be a factor.
  • Thanks everyone for your help!
I will consider and use all your great advice :)

I was on these protein shakes late last year and they did the same thing to me, I just could not get to 1000 calories and if I ate anything it would make me want to puke.

Maybe have a look at what you are eating, there might be an additive that makes you feel like that, for me I think it was an appetite suppressor or metabolism enhancer. The funny thing was, with all the protein although I was eating stuff all I was actually somehow putting on weight! Figure that one out.

The pain is probably a hunger pain- the acids in your stomach telling you they need something in there to break down. Try and stay away from rich and acidic foods if you aren't eating much as that will just increase your stomach pain. Try more for veggies and wholesome foods like breads and dry crackers. If you eat pasta you wont need to eat much at all to get a decent calorie amount in :)

Also maybe you have an intolerance to something- I know if i have too much dairy over a few days or weeks I get really ill and hugely terrible stomach pains- its a build up intolerance for me, so again take a look at what you are eating and try cut some things out a little or completely :)

this may sound odd but do you take a fiber supplement? if so stop taking it immediately. try to reduce your fiber intake in general, as well as your fat intake, and try to get some liquid nutrition. liquid meal replacers, fruit juices, v8 juice, light broth or tomato based soups, that sort of thing.
