I'm adding a question....to his 900 calories, doesn't it matter how much FAT, CARB, SUGAR is in the 900 calories? That must make a difference somehow.

How do those variables fit into the losing weight formula?

Unless there is a medical condition they do not apply at all to the losing weight. They effect how satiated you may feel and if you are following IIFYM you may not hit your MACRO goals, but as long as you are under your calorie goal you should still lose weight. Of course sodium intake may temporarily effect that.

calories are what matter for weight loss, macros are what matter for general health. eat 1000 cals less than your tdee of complete crap, and you will lose weight. will you be healthy? no. but you'll be smaller

Did the 900+ calories come from clean food? Or did you drop your sandwich on the floor?

Why would you consider one 900 calorie meal not healthy? When speaking of overall health and nutrition, food, fitness, lifestyle etc should be considered - one meal isn't enough to consider unhealthy, or even healthy for that matter.

You could even lose weight eating Twinkies if you ate them at a calorie deficit, ignoring the lack of macro nutrients.

That's why calorie counting works and fad diets don't.

One day off your macros won't hurt you. I work to stay within my calorie goals each day. Most days I also get close to my macro goals. But some days...... I still consider the day a success if I stay under my calories. I just try to make sure my macros are good the next days.

As stated above, for weight loss it is caloires in - calories out. If that results in a negative number, you are in a deficit and you will lose weight. That said, if you meet your calorie goals with Twinkies you probably won't feel very good. Macros are important for maintaining energy, maximizing fat loss, and minimizing lean body mass loss.

Weight loss and health are two different things-

HOW MUCH you eat affects weight loss.

    WHAT you eat affects health.

hence the "necessarily". i based that answer off the assumption we were talking about 900+ calorie meals at Penn station on a regular basis

eta: the whole "there are no healthy or unhealthy foods" idea on MFP gets taken way too seriously. i realize one meal doesn make or break a healthy lifestyle, but there's no way you can say a high calorie meal with little nutritional value is "healthy" when we are talking a about a singular instance

Would you say moderation with this sort of eating is a better way of going rather than just getting rid of it all together? Cause its nice to be able to eat something like this and not have to feel guilty all day. But I doubt its the best for your body to be full of all this kinds of fat and stuff.

I don't even do macros its all to confusing to me. Id rather just count calories unless I could find a easy to learn way of doing those

^ This. I could eat one WHOLE chocolate for the day (around 530 calories), lose weight but that won't make it healthy.

i would say so. no sense on cutting everything out, it would just stress you out and could potentially lead to a binge. you gotta let loose every once and awhile

The issue is subjective and contextual. If you consider a 900 calorie meal "high calorie", then that's your take. I can eat a 900 calorie meal and still have over 2,000 calories remaining. Subsequently, if the meal is devoid of nutritional value (which it couldn't be), I can still hit my recommended micro values by the end of the day. Even if I didn't hit any recommended values for the day, but I was spot on the rest of the week (or my life), how can you consider even one day unhealthy?

On the flip side, if I was morbidly obese, smoked and had diabetes, would you consider my one meal a day of salad, grilled chicken breast and spinach healthy?

So let me ask this, 3-4 times per week I have 2 slices of pizza which is easily 600 calories. Every day I hit my calories and macronutrient targets through a variety of foods, 7 days a week. Due to the pizza would you then consider me unhealthy? Is my eating unhealthy?
    see bolded.

as i said i was talking one specific instance. and i completely agree that its subjective its really all about how you look at things. personally i would consider that one single meal of chicken and spinach healthy (assuming it was portioned properly) due to the fact that if they ate similar foods to that all the time they would have a proper diet and more than likely would not be obese. the smoking has no effect on this because thats a separate part of their lifestyle, to me at least
