So for the last 5 months I've been eating healthier and dropping some weight. Since day 1 I've set a 5K distance whether I was walking it or jogging it or both. I started out 3 times a week walking then walking and some jogging. I'm now at the point for the last 3 weeks where I do 5k in about 33mins. I 've been doing this routine 7 days a week. My question is should I been taking a day somewhere for recovery? My legs do get a little sore but I take some Ibuprohen to compensate. I stretch as usual before and after, and usually the stiffness or pain(light) goes away after 5 mins of running. I've started out with some light resistance training every 2nd day as not to strain myself. My goal is sub 30 min for 5K...After I break that I will increase the mileage some and see how my stamina holds out.

The usual recommendation is to take a day off from running. You don't have to be sedentary, but just give your legs a break. Something low impact like some light cycling would be OK, or do some upper body stuff instead. Other than that, it sounds like you're making great progress.

Thanx for the info. I'll try and take a day off LOL. I seem to push myself to hard sometimes and like running.

Stop taking the ibuprofen on a routine basis. Not good for you and not good for recovery.

I know people that run every day and really 3 miles a day isn't all that much so keep it up if you enjoy it. If you're looking to improve you're speed there are some different approaches you should look into.

I like mixing some swimming and cycling in between my run days. Great cardio and lower impact. Plus it gives me the ability to do triathlon. Which I enjoy. ;-)
  • I agree with DangerJim71: Stop with the ibuprofen. Opt for icing your legs instead. 10 min on, 10 min off works well for me.

I definitely suggest taking at least one day off from running. On my days off I like to do a 2-3 mile brisk walk followed by some weight training. Biking and swimming are also good suggestions.

Thanks again all for the info. Maybe i'll try a walk and bike combo for my day off on a nice easy pace.
