My doctor told me I need to add more resistance training

Hello MFP,

I went to the doctor yesterday for a routine physicial and one thing my doctor mentioned was that I need to add more resistance training in order for me to lose weight. He said the kickboxing is good cardio, but all the walking I do isn't going to burn the calories I need like resistance training would do, and in a shorter amount of time. Do you guys have resistance training workouts you do? What routines do you do? I used to have a gym membership, but I feel like I can get good results at home using my weights, treadmill, outside world, and Xbox programs.

Thank you!

Exercise isn't required for losing weight. A calorie deficit is all that is required.

Both cardio and resistance training burn calories. Resistance training helps preserve muscle mass on a caloric deficit.

    Resistance training = good.
    Starting Strength, by Mark Rippetoe.
You'll get strong, increase bone density... a host of other benefits.

Not so much the burning of calories, but you won't care. Muscles take up less space than fat, and look way better anyway.
