Those Who Were Fit At One Point....

Question for those who were fit at one point, gained weight (fat) & lost again.
I am a 35 year old male & over about 4 years gained 55 pounds & 6" to my waist. (240 lbs/38")
4/5 years ago 185 was my most "ideal" weight I felt, mainly because it was where I fit into my 32 pant what I felt was perfectly.
I've since began a program back & have lost 42 pounds so far & 4" around my waist (198 lbs/34").
As I'm drawing closer I feel like I might be carrying some extra fat perhaps I didn't use to once I was around this body weight, probably about an 1" if I had to guess right now.
For some of you who have been in a similar situation once you have reached your "goal weight" have you had some more work to do before you truly fit into the clothing you wanted to again?
It would make sense to me as I did gain 55 pounds of fat & I am 4/5 years older & into my 30's as well.
Just trying to set up my realistic expectation now & what I may experience for those who have been in my shoes before, thanks!

From what ive read every time you lose then gain weight back more of it is fat, maybe because in the lost weight some is muscle and it wont be regained,so to speak, unless your strength training heavily. Also you can have two people same weight same height be different sizes because one can have more muscle mass and be smaller while weighing the same. Im an example of that, i have averaged a 20-25 lb weight gain then lose in my 30s,40,s and now my 50 s. Ive always exercised in my weight losses and strength trained. I am currently about 5 lbs heavier than my previous lowest weight ever but smaller clothes wise because i have been doing more intense lifting in the last two years. Hope that makes some sense to you. Just keep doing what your doing and if your not strength training start now.0

From my (personal) experience, once I exited my 20s, even though I stayed the same weight, muscle was being replaced by fat. As you get older (I'm 50 now), this keeps happening in a very sneaky way, so that you don't really notice it. I've just finished losing 21kg (about 46 lb - which was my 50th birthday present to myself!). From the age of about 23-30, I considered myself very fit and weighed 79-80kg (about 175 lb) which I was very happy with. I'm now at 75kg (about 165lb) and I still have more fat and less muscle than when I was younger and heavier. My goal is to get into strength training and stay at 75kg, hopefully replacing some of the fat with muscle. At 50, I think that is a more realistic goal than trying to bulk up and get to where I was half a lifetime ago. From what I understand, the older you get, the harder it is to do gain muscle, at 35, you should be able to do this more successfully than me. My thoughts are that at 35, you should have pretty high expectations of getting back to where you were, but as you age, remember to work smarter as well as harder - make it all count.
Even though I think I have pretty limited experience, I second what margannmks said - keep doing what your doing, and if you're not strength training, start now.0 -
Thank you for the responses everyone, they have been informative, please keep them coming!
Yes, I am strength training. When I was 185 before I was strength training & in good cardiovascular condition.
I was determined to get back the "right" way so my average weight loss has been about a pound a week, & have been adding muscle/burning fat.
I started this last fall so it's been a long process but I know this is the correct way to do it.
What I'm readying myself for is if I'm lucky enough to get to 185 again, understanding I may have to improve my composition some more without losing pounds on the scale per say, that is of course if I want to comfortably fit into the clothes again that I set out to from the beginning.
Thanks again!0
