Weight gain

I recently started watching my diet a couple of weeks ago and dropped 3 lbs in one week with diet alone. Then the following week I added an exercise program and saw that I gained 4 lbs! When do I start losing the weight again? My calorie goal is 1500-1800 a day. I know that your muscles need to adjust and you will gain water weight but when does it adjust-after two to three weeks?

Your weight will continue to fluctuate with water due to muscle repair after workouts, the amount of sodium in your recent meals and hormonal changes. It will also fluctuate according to the weight of the food you've recently eaten and have yet to...err....expel. Weightloss is not linear, for these reasons. Even if you did everything perfectly, and maintained a perfect 500 calorie deficit every day, your weight would still fluctuate up and down a bit.

Don't worry about small changes from day to day. Track the big changes over time. Those are the only ones that matter. Give every new thing you try at least 3 or 4 weeks before you decide if it's working.

Things you can do to make sure the scale keeps moving in the right direction are to weigh your food on a digital scale so that you can log accurately, and to use a heart rate monitor for workouts, and a fitness tracker for daily activity. These things will take all the guesswork out of the whole process.
