17 Day Diet, Low Calories?

Hello. I am back on MFP after about a year hiatus.
Some ladies here at work are doing the 17 Day Diet and have been very successful so I started it yesterday. I am following it closely, the only thing I did differently is I had about 2 TB salsa and 1/2 avocado with my turkey burger last night for dinner. I wasn't going to track my foods but I decided to track the calories and I am WAY under what is considered "normal." Yesterday I was at 972 calories for the whole day. I was not starving at all, but I don't want to put myself in starvation mode.
Some things on the 17 DD I don't agree with, like having fat-free dressings (sugar!!), fat free yogurt (sugar again), low fat or fat-free cheese (more sugar!!). I do find it confusing they don't allow nuts and only olive and flax seed oils for fats. I used some coconut oil for frying the turkey burgers for dinner last night, so I am not following the diet 100%, probably 95%.
I do like the fact that my sugars are much lower on this diet than in the past, mainly from restricting the kinds of fruit I can eat for the first 17 days. I don't have a sweet tooth but I try and stay away from sugar (refined/processed) as much as I can.
The next cycle of the 17 DD has you add in more meats, veggies and some legumes and I assume the first 17 days won't do too much harm to my system, right??

Why not just do this? It's easier means you don't have to starve or deprive yourself and you lose weight a no brainer IMO

Why not just eat at a reasonable deficit, unless you have a medical condition stop worrying about sugar. And do this in a way that you won't be making a post next year saying you are back to try again.
Check out the link that Fatdoobs gave you.0 -
Let's see ... away from MFP for about a year, comes back in the midst of a faddish crash diet, way too focused on sugars, not focused on a sustainable healthy deficit ... the reason why the OP is back is obvious.0

I'm not overly obsessed with sugar, I just don't like the fact that most fat free and light items add sugar to make up for the lack of fat. I'd rather eat real butter and olive oil than vegetable oil spread, give me full fat/natural sugars every time over anything processed or synthetic. I believer your body can get rid of natural foods better.
The 17 DD has motivated me to eat better than I have been, and it has made me plan and prepare for meals in advance so I don't grab an egg sandwich from a fast food place on my way to work, or eat instant oatmeal that has a lot of added sugar. By no means am I trying to "crash" diet, just resetting my system to try and reduce certain cravings.0 -

There is no "resetting" and the 17 Day Diet is a crash diet which you already know after calculating the sub 1000 calorie days. For somebody who claims you're not obsessed with sugar you sure do make sure to mention it repeatedly.0 -
You're not following the diet 100% if your yogurt has a lot of sugar. 2g of sugar per serving is the limit for added sugar. You can 1 serving of sugar free salsa (make it yourself) and it's compliant. The only thing I can't do is eat fat free cheese (except for feta, which I like the fat free version of!)
I use Chobani 0% plain greek yogurt and 6 ounces has 7g of naturally occurring sugar. It's not the sugar.. it's the added sugar this diet aims to reduce.
Are you using the original book or the newer one? I use the original one. If you go by the diet outlined in the book you will not be eating enough. the first cycle is the hardest one to get enough calories in. The others are much easier to do so. I eat 12 ounces of chicken or more at a time or 2-3 chicken/salmon/turkey burgers. With a big salad.
You're not going to get a lot of love on this forum for the diet (anything label diet for that matter). But if it works for you then do it anyway. It works great for me.

Best blog you will ever read on this meal plan. I've made of a lot of the recipes listed there. and they are super good
ETA: Protein and vegetables are unlimited in C1. So eat. If you are hungry. Eat. I eat all days long and still barely get enough calories in. Oh and when Day 3 hits.. just power through it! It will be gone in a day or two0 -

Very wise to watch your sugar content in your diet, since is associated, with all kinds of health problems.0
