working out how much you burn by Cycling

hey guys as its getting to be better weather ive just bought myself a mountain bike to try and get fit again.

does anyone know the best way of working out calories burned when cycling as its not always a flat route. i would think that if you were going uphill and putting more effort in, then more calories burned? and going downhill there isn't much effort involved at all. cant really get an estmate on what im really burning as on here it only asks for time taken in exercising.

any help would be ace :)

I use a HRM. I find the MFP burns are way too high. I think there are also some apps for your phone to calculate your burn, but I don't know which is the most accurate.
  • ill give the HRM a go thankyou :)

The mapmyfitness app is pretty good. It tracks your route, and it provides the distance, elevation, speed, etc. though I'm not certain if it factors that into the calorie burn.

Plus, sometimes other people have mapped a route, and you can compare your time, splits, etc. to theirs. It's kind of fun!
