32 YR OLD FEMALE 5'7 AT 28% BMI HELP.......................

According to my doctor I am at 28% BMI.... A healthy weight range for me is 21-25%, I am 32 yrs old 5'7 currently at 171 lbs. Can anyone help in guiding me to healthier BMI percentage?

    I think you're confusing the two. BMI is a function of your weight and height, and doesn't take body fat into account.

    OTOH, body fat % is measured by various means, commonly with calipers (the skin fold method), to determine what percentage of your weight is fat.

    I'm guessing, at your given weight and height, your BMI is 28. It's not a percentage. Your BF% is likely higher. Example, I'm 5'6", 149lbs, BMI of 24, BF% of 28%. Two different numbers and measurements, but both useful.


    ETA: Now, to answer your OP, it's best to continue your weight loss goals, while preserving as much lean body mass (LBM) as you can. That means lose it slowly (moderate calorie deficit, of around 0.5-1lbs a week weight loss goal), as well as doing some type of strength training (body weight, machines or free weights) to gain strength and maintain muscle mass.

    1. % defines a fraction out of 100 (no, you can not give 110%)
    2. The correct measuring unit for the BMI is kg/m2 (square meter) - better known as area density
    3. I would suggest you get your facts straight before writing something in capital letters

    I'm guessing you didn't read anything, then. Every response here was exactly the type of incredibly helpful advice I received to get me started. Helpful stuff you got:

  • Everyones response was INCREDIBLY HELPFUL.... I just dislike the last comment, when a person critics what I've misunderstood as far as BMI etc... as I am new to all the new healthy lifestyle thing. Not overly sensitive not at all.

    Track your food, eat at a deficit, and your BMI will go down as you lose.
