So I've been overweight my entire life. :( Tried one thing after another. Lost weight but always gained it back cause I didn't change my habits. So now I'm going to try the low carb high fat way of eating. After some research I think I can make this change. I'm 33 years old, 271lbs, 5'2", and a tight size 26. I started today. Made one mistake but it's a learning curve. Wish me good will power. :)

    It sounds like your learning and determined... both are so important when you're changing your lifestyle. Keep at it and surround yourself with support. You can do it. Best wishes and good will power ;)

    I wish you luck but it sounds to me like your leaping from one diet to another. If this will work for you that's great but will you be able to do this way of eating for the rest of your life? Very few people in reality can.

    I hear ya....what is working for me is making each day a goal. If I look too far ahead or look at the scale too often, it can be discouraging. One day at a time! Feel free to add me and like friends do here on MFP, we can encourage each other!

    Will power cannot do it alone. Change the environment. Get new tools for the kitchen (crock post, blender, . . ). Get all the stuff out of the kitchen that will get in the way of your goals, .. and so on. Good luck. You can do this.

    I would give up after one week of low carb. You know that you don't stick to one diet after another... how will this be any different?

    Have you tried calories in vs calories out? You let MFP figure out how many calories a day to eat to lose weight. Then, you eat that many calories. Then, you lose weight. It's way easier than low carb.

    Low carb was hellishly hard for me, and too restrictive for a normal life (in the UK IME at least). Calories in vs calories out is the only thing that is simple to do, works and is sustainable long term IMO.

    I would recommend you try this rather than low carb. Good luck!

    I wish you luck cause I have been where you are. I would hope you would rethink going on yet another diet and take a step back read the link that was given and I'm going to give you a few more. You don't have to go to drastic measures to lose weight, you don't have to be overly restrictive. I started at 285 lbs, was on doctor orders that I couldn't stand for more than 5 minutes every hour, so I understand. If I had decided to try going low carb I'm scared to think where I would be now, because I couldn't have done it.

    Log your food accurately and honestly. Go for 80% good choices the other 20% don't worry so much about. I eat lots of delicious food and have consistently lost. Keep it simple find a REASONABLE deficit: Most people do not need to eat 1200 calories to lose.

    If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
    If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
    If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal
    If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal
    If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal

    totally agree with everyone here so far, diets are all good and well but the best one to be on is a healthy balanced one that takes in to consideration what calories you need and goes at a deficit CICO (calories in calories out). Its slow and steady wins the race (and even then you just move on to the next race and continue) its long term and its straight forward.

    but you (as stated above) need to be honest about what you eat and log everything, get scales they are the only change really you need in your kitchen and weight everything so you are accurate and then set yourself realistic goals and dont get too worried when you have off days or blips in months where you plateau or go up slightly these are going to happen whilst you adjust and work on it. treat yourself somedays, once or twice a month just eat things you have stopped eating so they don't become too much or a secret desire and eat into your thoughts till you give in, one day or 2 days a month is not going to hurt you and also don't be too worried if you go slightly over your calories one day in a week, it will really make not much difference, its long term you need to think about in this case (yes keep each day as a goal and go through each day not thinking about the next that will help but equally don't get too bogged down in that mentality as it becomes difficult to maintain focus like that)

    And this will be another thing you have tried, emphasis on the past tense - tried. There's an easier way, and the folks above have illustrated it rather well.
  • I, too, have been overweight my entire life. I turned 50 in January, and decided that I couldn't stop getting older, but I could stop getting fatter. The key for me is to not limit myself. I can't remove whole food groups. I did Atkins years ago. Lost 50 lbs in 4 months, but the second I began reintroducing carbs, the weight started piling back on.

    It was important for me to understand that I didn't get this way in 6 months, so I can't fix it in 6 months. And it's not about losing it and returning to my previous habits. I had to figure out that this was a complete overhaul of myself. My attitude towards food, my relationship with food, and my addiction to food.. all had to be addressed.

    Don't diet... don't even CALL it a diet... it's a lifestyle change.. better habits for a better you.

    And please.. believe that you're worth every effort you make. :smile:

    Do you think you can eat low carb for the rest of your life?
    Its ok to try it but if it turns out you can't, and I sure couldn't, it sounded great but a couple of months in and all I could think about were french pastries, breads and potatoes, if you find that it's not possible for you to live that way and stay sane you shouldn't give up hope.

    I have come to the conclusion that you only need willpower to form a habit right at the start, once you get the ball rolling you shouldn't need it constantly, your life should be set up so your default choices are good ones. You don't really need to make dramatic changes in order to lose weight, especially when you're very overweight. Little, easy changes, one at a time, they can work too - and you're much more likely to make them last a lifetime if you make little changes instead of big ones.

    Some ideas for little changes:

    - Deciding not to use a car or public transport for any trip less than 0.5/1/2/3 (depending on current fitness level) miles (and you save money on fares and fuel too!).
    - Pre-scheduling meals and any snacks and not eating apart from at scheduled times.
    - Keeping a food and exercise log (hence myfitnesspal), even on "naughty" days.
    - Parking a little bit further away from places when you take the car, or getting off the bus a stop early.
    - Using a smaller plate.
    - Filling ⅓ of your plate with non-starchy vegetables at each meal.

    etc.

    Try the LCHF thing if you want, but its damn hard - and losing weight simply doesn't have to be that hard.

    I've lost all of my weight so far eating a Ketogenic diet. However, this is no different than any other diet. If you stick with it, you will remain successful at maintaining a healthy weight.

    It's got to be a lifestyle change or you're doomed to yo-yo. You will find this site biased against Keto/HFLC diets. http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq is a great place to get more info & there are a couple of Keto MFP groups you can join.

    Its not a discipline problem, an eating problem, or motivation problem..Its Process Problem...eat one like match sticks must line up so that there is no turning back..Each time one pound is lost..a feature of your process does not allow you to simply cut down all your tress with one single mistep in process..

    This destroys freewill..You become a slave to the process repeating mistakes over and over that has no end in sight. Its a curse and you need to have your curse removed.

    I want to help break this unrest and gift you lifeforce. The first order of business is to realize your body has a lipolytic enzyme issue..This is a hormone that commands and over rides the force field unwanted body fat puts out..If you are unable to shut down the force field...your curse remains just that a cusce forever..     Are you going to eat this way for life? If not, then this may not be the eating plan for you. I LOVE eating keto-style, which is low carb and high fat with moderate protein. I plan on eating this way for life, as long as my body allows for it. I may up the carbs a little bit once in maintenance, but I'm NEVER going back to high carbs. If you can see yourself eating this way for life, then good luck! You can't see this as a "diet" or a quick fix. It HAS to be a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.

    You need to stop finding new "diets" and find a new way of life. Those of us with lifelong weight problems have to change the way we think and find a new way to eat and be active for the rest of our lives. Diets generally do result in weight loss but many, if not most, are not something you could realistically live on forever.
