I read the information about the book on amazon. It is writtten by yoga instructors based on the nutritional recommendations of yoga masters. Thus, there is no "hard science" behind it.

A cleanse is not good for you. For those who take prescription drugs or have sugar or endocrine problems a cleanse may be dangerous for you because it is a VLCD (very low calorie diet), at least in its early stages and VLCDs should not be undertaken without close medical supervision.

Now, if you are young and healthy, a short cleanse may not hurt you much but do be prepared to restore the nutrients you miss during the process of the cleanse through restored eating afterwords.

The initial fast weight loss of a cleanse is due to water weight and, to a lesser extent, the VLCD. If you find that inital weight loss psychologically reinforcing for you, then do it but expect that weight to come back or result in a "plateau" as your body restores what it lost during the "cleanse." For many, that plateau undoes the positive aspects they imagined from the "cleanse."

A cleanse is a yo-yo diet. My new mantra: Yo-yo diets are for yo-yos -- don't do this to yourself.

Our bodies are already good cleansing machines.
