OATMEAL EVERY MORNING

Ok so I know this is kinda a weird question but for the last few days I haven't really been sticking to a "diet" (eating clean). Since then I have still been continuously losing pounds. I am NOT starving myself by any means of the imagination (trust me lol). I've even been eating fast food on some days. BUT however I do eat oatmeal EVERY MORNING. So my question is can oatmeal serve as like detox of some sorts to "flush" the bad food out of your body? Im just a little confused as to how i'm not eating clean and slacking on exercise and STILL continuously lose weight.

No, and moreover there isn't any need to detox or flush anything out of your body. That's a nonsensical idea that supplement companies want you to believe so that you purchase their product.

There is a 7 Days To SKinny Jeans thing by Lauren Conrad that has oatmeal in it and claims to help you lose weight. I've tried it and it's pretty good so I think that is what is causing you to keep losing weight PLUS it's an excellent source of protein and keeps you full for quite a while so you might not snack as much...but I"m not an expert or anything so take that as you will...

You're losing weight because you're in a calorie deficit. Not because of clean eating, or lack of, or whatever. You're also gaining health because of the exercise. Oatmeal is fine to eat every morning, I eat it a lot, because I like it. Detox/cleanse is not a thing, as PP pointed out.

As long as you're maintaining a safe calorie deficit and exercising regularly, you're "doing it right" to get to healthier.:flowerforyou:

if you eat less calories than you burn, you'll lose weight. that being said, oatmeal does help lower cholesterol, and it's offers good quality complex carbs.

    Calories to control weight
    Macronutrients for body composition
    Micronutrients for health

You can eat anything you want, but not as much as you want, and be healthy while getting great results if you pay attention to calories, macros, and micros. If you are one of those people who have a hard time reaching their calories, then eating something high in calories like pizza or icecream will probably benifit you more than by being way under your calorie goals consistently.

Nope. Oatmeal doesn't cause weight loss. Eating fewer calories than you burn causes weight loss.

If oatmeal helped with weight loss, I would never be able to maintain.

Sometimes I eat it twice a day. No reason other than a) I like it and b) it's filling.

In fact, the filling part might be the only thing that would help with weight loss. The fact that you can eat just a little of it and feel full for a few hours. More than if you add peanut butter in it.

It definitely doesn't work as a 'detox'. But it is an amazing food.

I have oatmeal every morning. It fits into my planned eating for the day and I happen to like it. There are plenty of health benefits.

Nowhere in that list did you find "detox" or "flush bad foods out of your body."

Evaluate oatmeal as one component that you can choose to incorporate into a healthy diet. But don't expect miracles or quick fixes.

Oatmeal with cream and berries. Yum yum. There was a study done years go that found if you did absolutely nothing else with your life style EXCEPT walk a mile every day (thats 1.6 km for those of you on this side of the dateline) you can expect to weigh 12lbs less after a year. Nothing to do with big pharm detox bull**** but calories in/calories out deficit. So there is your first 12lbs gone.

Next elimininate added sugars. Added sugars in food account for 20 teaspoons a day in the average American diet. Most of it comes from soda, baked goods and breakfast cereals, candy, fruit drinks, sweetened milk drinks and sweetened milk products. So eat meat, vegetables, whole fruit and whole grain and dairy products that havent been sweetened. So oats..steel cut the best and quick oats sweetened with sugar the worst. 317 calories a day saved from overcoming that sugar addiction thats another 36 lbs a year gone.

Cut down on bread pasta and rice. The HI factor is very high for these products. Most of the goodness is gone. And if your still not losing weight then you are eating too much. Experiment on portion control until you find something that works for you.

Thanks to my daughter and her purchase of the best book on overall fitness " The Womens Health Big Book Of Fitness And Exercise" that I have ever read for some of the insights above. Re sugar addiction you cant go past howmuchsugar.com and the studies quoted therein.

    Eat healthy and eat often.

I'm with Side Steel on the "detox" crap, but I can tell you, when I eat oatmeal in the morning, it makes me "go" quite a bit during the day! (One of those foods my Mom used to call "a broom.") Good luck to you! I'll be having my oatmeal in the morning. :drinker:

Well, crapping IS one way your body removes waste, which is in effect detoxifying. As is breathing and circulating blood and most other biological functions. It's not like 'detox' refers only to the liver functions or 'toxin' only to things in green drums.

    MFP is so literal.

Nope; not a detox. I eat oatmeal EVERY MORNING, too, and it doesn't do anything special for me, except maybe help keep my cholesterol down.

OP you have noticed this "over the last few days"?

A few days isn't enough time to draw any conclusions anyway - daily weight fluctuations would be variable.

Oatmeal is great food ( although I don't like it much myself) but it has no magical detox properties

No, oatmeal is just....oatmeal. However, I am a true believer in steel cut or just regular old oatmeal and not that fast cooking stuff. I have oatmeal every weekday morning with peanut butter, fruit, and unsweetened coconut milk. I MUST have my oatmeal, unless I have a wheat cereal. I love Cream of Wheat, but have not had it in a long while.
