whey powder making me GAIN weight?

So a little background: I am not a breakfast eater in the least but knew I needed to fuel my body for the day so I wouldn't binge eat by lunch. I also don't really like meat which makes getting protein in a challenge. My trainer over the summer suggested protien shakes for breakfast, quick, easy, filling and meatless.

Great ! I like them. 2 scoops of whey protien most mornings with a cup of non-fat plain yogurt.

Is this going to make me GAIN weight!? I noticed the other day that the containter said "not intended for weight loss" and I wasn't sure if it was saying this is going to make you bulk up like a football player, or more, don't take this as a weight loss suppliment.

Just curious, will my 2 scoops of whey protein probably...3 or 4 times a week cause me to gain weight?

It shouldnt, but not all protein powders are created equal...read the labels.. If your physically active they recommend 1g per lb of bodyweight.

No, provided you are still in a caloric deficit.

There is a wide variety of protein powders out there - check the label for carb and sugar content. Also you really don't need more than about 20-30 grams of protein per meal - you might be better off (depending on your brand) having one scoop with fruit blended in. But no it should not make you gain wait, they put that disclaimer on there so people know it's not a 'diet' product per se.

As the above posters said, it shouldn't. I have been using whey for about 2 weeks and it's actually helped me lose weight already - I wasn't getting anywhere near enough protein before.
  • no way....they help you build muscle, which in turn burns fat. i drank the hell out of some protein girl!!!

just make sure it's not packed with calories, sugar, or a bunch of crap you dont need or want.

No, I think it's just nourishment! I am drinking the Reliv Classic and Innergize shake and eating too! I have been losing weight REALLY well. When your body is nourished it will release fat. Moderate cardio plus some weights, stay at or slightly over your calories, consistently and your body will feel SAFE to release fat! It works for me, maybe it will work for you. It's worth a shot!! Count your calories in your protein shake. Everything you eat must be counted. Stay at or slightly over your calories, (like not more than 40 calories over though) Then some days shoot to be about 10 to 40 under. It balances out and your body will just start releasing fat!

Not unless you don't count those calories... just make sure you log them and stay around your recommended daily goal, you should be fine.

Thanks everyone, I always log it, stay active, and usually come right around my calorie goal. We will see if these help, becuase otherwise I am getting next to no protien in (there is only so much peanut butter a person can eat). I also found a recipe for a black bean burger...and I bought some fish that should be easy to grill, so well on my way to getting protein in.

I just needed something for breakfast that would hold me over till my late lunches, that I could also take with me ( I am verrryyyy busy) so that seemed the easiest, pretty cheap, and I know what is in them.

thanks for the responses! They made me feel better :) wish me luck, doing a biggest losers challenge at work!

oh and I have something like precision engineered whey protien? idk I got it from GNC, I will read the lables, I am almost out anyways, so I will look at some other brands as well for the next round.

As everyone said it shouldnt but you can also look into lean protein shakes, which is what I take several times a day.

One scoop should be the recommended serving. You can have it with milk, soy milk, water or make a huge green smoothie. Also, add it to oatmeal, make protein bats/brownies, mix it with cottage cheese and freeze it to make high protein ice cream. The options are limitless. But no, it will not cause weight gain.

Calories in < calories out = a winning formula

    This is not true.

Agree with everyone else. Calories in vs calories out.

Whey is a food, primarily, almost a pure protein source. Two scoops are fine as a breakfast to help supplement your intake of protein. Typical profile of a serving of whey protein is ~24g of protein/120 calories per serving.

It won't make you gain weight as long as you're in a calorie deficit.

One other thing to note: Some whey products contain creatine, which may increase water retention, but it has no bearing on fat loss or gain. That is controled strictly by net energy balance.
  • Ok I exercise and lift weights every day but im trying to lose weight and gain muscle and now I drink whey protein as a meal replacement for lunch. Will that make me gain weight???

1g per pound of lean body mass. Not body weight. And to OP it isn't a weight loss supplement but unless you are consume additional calories, than it won't make you gain. Eat at a deficit and lose. I love my Whey protein shakes :)

Just a note though, if you're only measuring by "scoop" and not by scale weight, you're most likely going to be consuming more than one serving size. My powder's serving size is 2 scoops (39g) and 2 full scoops is most definitely always more than 39g. More like 45g or so. So be careful with logging!

Idk the formula you use but mine is one scoop=1 svg. I sometimes
do a whole svg and others I take .5 svg .. if you have troubles I
would recommend maybe trying it w/other food options like milk or
water .. maybe take .5 less at a serving. Just experiment. :)

It's neither. The whey protein itself is not going to bulk you up nor make you lose weight.
To bulk up like a football player, you need to lift very heavy AND eat at a calorie surplus AND have as much testoterone as a male. It requires a lot of hard work and time for women to gain muscles mass.
To lose weight, you need to eat at a calorie deficit. That's it! Whatever you eat.

I find it funny this gained more post and it's been 2 years ago since I have asked the question lol. I actually educated myself a lot since then. To everyone that responded, y'all were right I did not indeed "bulk up like a football player" as I was once worried. I am almost embarrassed at such a silly question I asked ! Had to start somewhere I guess lol

Thanks for the replies lol !

Not at all! I have two scoops a day. Every day of the week (to help me get to my protein goal). I've still lost weight.

Because consuming whey protein doesnt equal weight loss? In fact whey protein is used for body builders who need to burn a lot of calories....

Also, non-fat yoghurt doesnt mean low calorie yoghurt. They are usually full of sugar and can be even more calorific than full fat ones.

    Calories in.........Calories out......

Oh, and losing weight and gaining muscle are pretty much exclusive. You can't really do both at the same time, especially females. (extreme outliers aside, of course). Since you're replacing a meal with a protein shake (not really the purpose of a protein shake), I'm guessing your caloric intake isn't anywhere close to allowing you to build muscle/gain weight.
  • I'm glad you posted this because I just googled to find the same answers you were looking for. My fiancé drinks "whey protein elite series" and I just started a job that requires A LOT of stamina and I burn calories constantly in 100 degree heat sweating all day. Lol. I need something in the morning to get me going and I don't like breakfast. Is anyone familiar with the "elite series" formula and if this is okay for me ? I DO NOT want to gain any weight, just gain muscle and benefit from a strenuous job by getting in shape. It is sold at Walmart and has pro athletes on the canister. I am not sure if this formula has extra stuff in it that can cause me to gain weight. Thank you!
