Too many carbs

I notice that I eat a lot of carbs and not much protein. I eat a mostly veggie diet although, I'm not vegetarian, I try to eat meat only 1 - 2 times a week. How important is protein, really? And how will eating more carbs effect my weight loss? My carbs come from whole grain pasta (brown rice), breads, fruits etc.

Protein will keep you full and help alleviate muscle loss that can happen when you lose weight quickly.

Complex carbs are important, but too much of anything is not great. Eating less carbs or more complex ones will help with weight loss. Even when the carbs come from fruit, sugar is sugar- it increases your blood sugar and can cause fluctuations, weight gain, and sugar cravings.

A happy balance is important- and MFP gives a generous amount of carbs per day.
  • Some non-meats that are high in protein:
    Beans,
Peanut Butter (though also can be fatty!)
    Greek Yogurt
    rye bread
    flax

I dip my veggies in cucumber garlic greek yogurt - low cal (23) and 2 g protein per 4tbsp.
  • Thank you. Don't beans also have a high carb content? I just thought about snacking on some nuts too, those have high protein. Do you know which nuts would be best?(I don't like almonds)

Try Quinoa, one of the most protein packed plant foods there is!
  • Oh yeah, I always forget about Quinoa! It's not so good by itself but with some sort of sauce....hmmm...Does anyone have any really tasty, low carb, low cal, Quinoa Recipes?

Carbs with fiber help out (net carbs = carbs - fiber). I also notice some of the foods I eat add flax to lessen the carb load..
