My husband and I are thinking about having this surgery in mexico. Have any of you had luck in going there to have your surgery?

Not to be disrespectful, but I laughed out loud when I saw this because I thought it was a joke.
It does not seem like a good idea to me. But what do I know?0 -
Not sure this is going to be the right place to ask that question and get the answers you want I am sure some people here have had that surgery but you may have better luck getting answers if you find a gastric sleeve forum0

You might have more people with this experience in a more GB specific site. I've known people who've had success with GB as a couple. Extreme success for both of them, but they had their surgeries in the US. Is there a financial or insurance reason to do so? I'm sure there are skilled surgeons in Mexico, but I would think you'd have to consider both of you in recovery at the same time (who's going to help you?) and the air travel while recovering, too.
Definitely seek out more research to get more specific and meaningful testimonies.:flowerforyou: Good luck to you!0 -
A friend of mine went to Mexico to have lap-band done. She was in and out the same day. After she came home, she ended up in surgery again to repair a problem she developed from something that was done wrong during the surgery.
Funny, the insurance wouldn't pay for her surgery to begin with becuz she wasn't heavy enuf ... but they paid for the repair to fix the screw-up. go figure.0 -

There's a site called Plastic Surgery Journeys that probably has a forum for this type of surgery. People do travel all over to get surgery done. Just make sure you REALLY do your homework. And usually when you travel it's required to stay for a couple weeks for pre and post ops, something else to weigh in.0

I honestly cannot think of a worse idea.
I guess using a BOGO coupon for the surgery.0 -
2 nurses I work with have gone to mexico and paid 5000.00 for the surgery and has had wonderful results. this was about 2 years ago. It is a sham that in the US it cost about 25,000-30,000. Their experience was good. Good luck!0

There will be both success stories and horror stories. I typically stay out of bypass threads, because I do believe in people making their own choices. From my professional experience, I have seen what happens when people have bypass surgery in Mexico and it goes wrong... Really, really wrong. I am certain that there are many successful stories as well, but the post-op complications I have seen that were the worst, were life altering/ending. I hope that you take the time to seriously consider your alternatives and do not make this choice lightly.
Can you get the surgery in your own country? If not, why not? In Canada there are specific requirement that must be met first. I assume this is true in the US as well. If you do not meet these requirements, why do you feel that circumventing your own health care system will be a good plan? The wait list in Canada is crazy long, I don't know about the US. (I don't know where you live). So I have seen cases where people felt paying the money would save them some time, they didn't consider possible complications, only that they were scared and wanted a 'quick' solution. Surgery is not a quick solution even when it is complication free. Best of luck, whatever you decide.0 -
