Portion size math help

Hello im having problems calculation portion sizes
rather than do math formulas that I tend to just eat what MFP has in its database as far as size options because figuring out the math takes me a long time.
if something is listed as 1 ounce, Ill eat 1 ounce. etc. even if i want 1.5 ounces. or .5 ounces.
as long as it maintains my calorie goals
now my question:
does anyone know formulas that I can do by hand that can help me with portions?
example
if I want to eat 125 grams of pizza
and the pizza box says it is 418grams per whole pizza and 800 cal.
what is the formula to find out calorie per gram? how many calories in 85 grams of pizza if 500 grams is 1000 calories? etc etc.
I know this is simple for most people but I have no math ability at all so please don't laugh at me.
any other useful math formulas for portions that anyone knows and uses or any conversion apps etc that they use? Id be grateful to hear about

Think of it this way (hopefully, this helps instead of making it more confusing):

How much you are having (grams) divided by how much total (grams) multiplied by total calories

    So in your examples:

You are having 125g or the pizza divided by the total pizza 418g multiplied by the total number of calores

    125 / 418 x 800 = 239 calories for your 125g portion.

You are having 85g of the pizza divided by the total pizza 500g multiplied by the total number of calories

    85 / 500 x 1000 = 170 calories for your 85g portion.

I hope that helps. Math can be confusing. I was blessed with math, my English, spelling and grammar suck

Assuming you are weighing your food, MFP does have calories per gramme, so weigh food, enter using the gramme option

    The other users pizza example was excellent, but for the simpler issues you are having;

If you want to eat 1.5 ounces and the option is listed as an ounce just say you are having 1.5 servings. If the option is 10 ounces and you want 5 ounces just saying you are having 0.5 of a serving.

If you use the gram setting for weighing your food, it's pretty easy to enter it without any calculations (or with very simple ones).

Example: if you want to eat 125 g of pizza you simply choose the 1 gram unit from the units drop down menu in your food diary and enter "125" and you're done. Alternatively, you could use the 100 g unit and just put a decimal point 2 numbers in (from the right) in this example it would mean you enter 1.25 if the units are showing 100 g.

If no gram units are available (though you should try to look for those) and it's only in oz, use this link
    https://www.google.jo/search?q=50+ounces+to+grams&rlz=1C1GIGM_enJO527JO527&aq=f&oq=50+ounces+to+grams&aqs=chrome.0.57.8899j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#newwindow=1&q=grams+to+ounces&safe=off

Save this to your bookmarks, enter the number of grams in the first box (in your case 125) and the result is shown in the other box (4.40925 oz). You go to MFP and enter 4.4 if the unit is in oz. If the serving shows a weird number like 1.5 oz, again, use the drop down menu to make it 1 oz.

If you are making a custom food entry, just enter the whole amount (1000 calories for a 500 grams of pizza) and make sure to have the serving size at 500 g. This will give you the option later to use the drop down menu and chose 1 g, which will automatically do the calculations for you.

Basically you need to get used to the unit drop down menu when you enter your foods.

how many calories per gram if something is 960 calories for 411 grams

how many calories per gram if something is 960 calories for 411 grams

The equation for that is calories/grams (calories divided by grams). 960/411 = 2.336 calories per gram.

Why don't you just add your things as custom food? Make a new item entry, set portion size at 411 g and then you can input any amount you want without having to do calculations (provided you choose 1 g from drop down menu)

If you don't want to do that, in the future just replace the word "for" with "÷", so 960 calories for 411 grams becomes 960 calories ÷ 411 grams. After that, it would be easy to find an answer using a calculator

    Thank you for the formula
for things I eat often, I will take your advice and make a custom food.
I often just do the math and enter as "quick calories" because my phone is 7 years old and it takes ages to use MFP database. (also the amounts I want to eat arnt in the dropdown list and so I have to do math anyway to modify the portion size there).
Also my phones internet connect is flakey and I can't access the database from inside half the time.
I will use the make custom food option more ofthen tho thanks for the tip.

I don't have a smart phone, so I enter everything from the website. I spend 5 minutes each day to log the whole day and then adjust as needed. If you have easy access to a computer, that might be a better option for you.

Alright, I will make it even easier for you.

I made a spreadsheet (just enter the values in the yellow boxes) that will help you figure things out faster. You enter total grams and calories in any food you want and it will calculate the calories per gram.

I have also added a couple of useful things that will make it even easier. After you enter the food, you can specify how many grams you are having which will calculate the number of calories per serving. The last option is if you wish to have a certain number of calories of the food, it will tell you how many grams to eat if you only want to have, say, 200 calories.

Note: Please do not change anything other than the yellow boxes.

Here is the link to the spreadsheet: http://tinyurl.com/CaloriesPerGram (it's a google docs document so you don't have to worry about the safety of the file)
