Not sore after weight training? + Home gym question

Hi all,
I have just started doing weight training more seriously and regularly. I work out at home, and currently the heaviest weights I have are 16 lb dumbbells. I know, very light. For some moves, these are too heavy for me to do the exercises correctly-- for example, I couldn't do an overhead press with those more than once or twice (I am using AllPro's Beginner routine), but for others like squats, bench presses, and deadlifts, it's very obvious they are too light. I am buying a 105 lb adjustable dumbbell set later this week. No barbell etc. because I have a tiny house and there is no space available for a rack and so on.
Anyway! I am noticing that I'm not at all sore the day after the routine, but when I do vigorous circuit training with high reps of slightly lighter weights, I am sore. I'm wondering if the fact that I am not really feeling it in my muscles the day after a weight training workout means that the weights are just too light to be doing anything for me?
Also, those of you who work out at home, what do you use for a weight bench if you don't have one? I don't have a large fitness-equipment budget so am trying to figure out a safe substitute for a weight bench.
Thanks.

I'd imagine you'd be sore once you up the weights for your squats, deadlifts and bench presses. Something more like 30-40 lb dumbbells would be more challenging. I hate overhead press and I usually don't feel the DOMS with it either. Maybe if you lower the weight and get a couple reps in you'd feel it more.
Have you looked into any foldable, portable weight benches? Something like this

You can also use a stability ball as a "weight bench". Pretty cheap, I got mine for about $10 at wal mart0

I hate overhead presses too! They suck! Even with my 12 lb dumbbells, unfortunately! I can't wait to get the heavy dumbbells later this week.
Thanks for the link to the weight bench! You can also use a stability ball as a "weight bench". Pretty cheap, I got mine for about $10 at wal mart
I actually do this currently, and I really like it since I feel it strengthens my core more than using a bench would. But if I somehow manage to start doing bench presses with 80 lbs of dumbbell (that will take a long time I am sure), I am fairly sure my exercise ball would pop. That would not be good! I guess perhaps it's something I don't immediately need to worry about-- just eventually when I start using more of the possible weight of the weights I'm getting.0
