Any tips for working out with a bad back?

I'm attempting to lose weight and tone up once again. I've been out of it ~even scared~ because of lower back issues (L4-L5 area). Have had two steroid injections last year to help the pain, but still scared I'll get hurt because the pain still rears its ugly head.

Anyone have any tips for good work out routines? It's difficult for me to twist or do any crunch/sit up type of work because of my back. I've been trying to walk more but even that has its limitations.

Thanks!

Walking in a pool is a good activity for those with lower back issues.

Look into DDP Yoga. It was developed by a former professional wrestler after he blew his back out in the ring. It is easy to modify based on your limitations. It isn't traditional yoga. It is on DVD so you can do it at home. I love it.

Walking. I've found it helps to relax my back muscles. Without a daily walk my back can twinge, my muscles become tense and I've even had a couple of periods of excruciating pain.

    Thanks for all the ideas!
    * I'll keep up the walking.
    * I've thought about exercising in a pool as well. I'll check into the local Y and see what's available.
    * Never heard of that type of yoga. Will take a look-see!
