Is a cake only as many calories as the ingredients?

This must seem like the stupidest question ever asked but bear with me I'm new to this stuff :) So I made a mug cake and the ingredients were 1 egg (71 cals), 2 tbsp cocoa powder (20 cals) and 3 tbsp sweetener (0 cals). Does that mean the cake is only 91 cals?? Its just so yummy I feel like there must be a catch!! :)

Yes. Calories don't magically appear. If you enter those ingredients into the recipe tool it just adds the totals together.

Yes, that calorie-count should be accurate for your mug cake.

depends on how long you let it set out. If it ferments, some of those calories may get sugar calories (4 cal/gram) converted to alcohol calories (7calories per gram).

Is there really no flour in your cake? And no fat (oil? butter?) of any kind? If there is, you're missing some significant calories there. But if you've accounted for all of the ingredients, then yes, you've got an accurate calorie count there.

    (reads ingredient list)

    1 egg
    2 tbsp cocoa powder
    3 tbsp sweetener

    OK, um.

That sounds like a chocolate egg to me. :)

Was there really not any flour or anything? How does it become a "cake"?

Just curious. If that is the actual recipe, and it tastes good, I'd like to know how to make it and give it a shot myself!

Why wouldn't it? Food doesn't magically grow more calories when combined and baked in a specific way. That would be alchemy.

Yeah, I made that one out of curiosity, though it did also include salt, baking powder, and vanilla (OP, vanilla extract does have a few calories).

Chocolate-flavored scrambled egg is what I tasted. Yuck.

I do not understand why so many people like that recipe. Maybe they've denied themselves chocolate for so long that any taste of it is good?

Yup that's it! I got it from one of those simple cooking channels! I guess it might not taste so good to others though, hah.

I think it's some sort of punch that usually involves alcohol.

I'm not quite sure why I want this conversation to involve thermodynamics.

Generally yes, the whole is made up of the sum of the parts, though now I feel the urge to take a class on the chemistry of cooking.
