Technology advice needed

My modem crashed yesterday and I went and got a new one which works fine, but it my wireless router won't sync with it for some reason. I spent a good 3 hours yesterday resetting everything twice to no avail. It looks like now I have to get a new router too. But I've seen the "combined' modem/router units out there. Does anyone out there have experience with them? I'd rather just deal with one unit as a whole. I can still return this new modem I got in exchange for a combined unit or just go an buy another router.

Opinions from the tech savvy?

Err, what model is it? And your router? Cos it's been a long time since I've used a standalone one of either ;D

i had the same issue. Try making sure they both support the same wireless technology (letters) I noticed when I tried using my netgear hub / router with my cisco router which was much newer I had a huge issue and can't use it. Once i got something with the same supported N wireless it all worked out.

I purchased a Cisco combonation modem/router about two months ago. I do like only having one unit to worry about.

D-link is the router. I had a Zoom modem, but got a Netgear yesterday. For $40 more I can get a combined unit if I exchange this current modem.

I hate the D-Link routers, they seem to go bad often.

I've been using a belkin at home and we use cisco at the office.

Dont forget to change the router password from default when you get it. Otherwise you end up giving anyone free access to your interwebs.

(To that I thank my neighbors for the month when I moved and couldn't afford it myself.)

It could depend on how the modem is passing the connection to the router. My old cable modem gave a non-routable IP address to the router (192.168.100.1), so I had to statically configure that in the router. My new cable modem passes the public IP to the router, so the router had to be configured to get it's upstream IP via DCHP.

Netgear is where it's at. I had a netgear from 2006 to 2012 never failed. My new one was bought for faster speeds. The old one was too slow to support gaming through it.

Almost certainly it's not that they're incompatible but rather there's something going on in how they're configured. Take a look at how the router is configured to get an IP address from the modem (static or dynamic) and also look at how the modem is configured to hand out IP addresses. It may be worthwhile to do a factory reset on your router and reconfigure it from scratch (which for most people is only a minimal amount of configuring).

who is your internet provider? A lot of these places will provide a wireless modem/router

Oh, sure, you just want me to lose my static routes, VPN, and NAT table.

This^^ See if it's a configuration issue between the two.

They don't give you a list of what modems are compatible with the router?

I bought mine (many years ago) from the 3gstore and they give you a list of what modems will work with thier craddlepiont routers

    http://cradlepoint.com/products/small-business-home-office-routers/mbr95-wireless-4g-3g-router

if your going with a combined unit, i'm assuming your going to have to make sure it can be used with your carrier.

no, all i know for sure about the subject is what the OP just discovered, not every cellular router will work with every air card

Most cable/DSL modems are going to connect to your router via Ethernet and communicate through network standards that haven't changed for quite a while. The link you provided appears to be a modem that connects with 3G/4G devices via USB, and there you may well run into some compatibility issues. But if we're just talking about two network devices communicating over an Ethernet connection, compatibility is almost certainly not the problem and configuration almost certainly is.

I did that step by step..................3 times to no avail. I'm not a computer whiz, so I'm sure I forgot somesteps, but even then the last month or so I've been rebooting my router at least once a day. Anyway I just got a Netgear modem/wireless router combo and hooked it up in less than 30 minutes. I'm good to go again.

Isn't it cool? You're only the 5th person that's ever said anything about it.
