Why the hell can't I go down a pants size?

So I've been at the weight loss thing for about 2 months, down about 10 pounds and I've gained quite a bit of muscle and look more toned. My stomach is nearly flat, you can only tell it isn't when I don't have a shirt on, I'm 139 pounds, which is considered normal weight for my height. There are girls that weigh a LOT more than me that are roughly the same height and wear a size 6 or 8.. but not me, I'm still a size 13.. wtf. 13 is considered plus size.. and I'm not even considered overweight anymore according to my BMI.

try different brands of clothes
im a man and don't have hips
none of my pants fit after only 15 pound loss.
even some of my belts had to be replaced.
its not a lack of weightloss its the clothes or your skeleton and being female shape.0 -
Do you have the same body type/shape as the girls that are the same weight and height that wear a size 6 or 8? It's like comparing apples to oranges if you don't have the same body type/shape. Focus on being healthy and looking good in what ever size you wear. Forget about the number.0

It just depends on how/where you carry your weight. A lot of people would consider you lucky to lose in your abdominal area first! Just stick with it, it'll come off eventually.0

Have you tried switching to misses sizes? I can't wear those juniors sizes (the odd numbered ones) at all.
Other than that, I_Will_End_You is right-- you probably store fat differently than the girls to whom you're comparing yourself. I store my fat on my thighs so I had a flat stomach fairly early but it took longer to lose inches from my legs.0 -
The style of clothes I prefer to wear don't usually come in misses sizes, and I guess I'm probably not the same shape as those other girls, I'm more of an hourglass shape. It's just super frustrating, I'd like to not be considered plus sized anymore ><0

Juniors and misses are cut differently. Seriously, try other styles and cuts on. There are plenty of misses pants that are just as cute as the juniors styles.
Overall though, no one but you knows what size jeans you are wearing. If you look good, rock it out. Wear the size that fits well on you, don't try to squeeze yourself into a size down just to be a size down. It actually makes you look bigger.
Another thought, I'm down 14 lbs and am not down a pants size. that's because the pants that I were wearing were ridiculously tight on me before and now they fit properly. (so I'm a big, fat hypocrite. Or I'm just learning as I go too)0 -
Sounds like a possible combination of things.
1) 13 is a junior size (odd #s) and you really can't compare it to regular women's clothing (even #s). I'm a size 12 but if I try on an 11 or 13, I feel like a complete hippo. Try different brands and/or get the even number sizes - you may actually fit fine in a 6 or 8
2) As the others mentioned, it may just be your shape. My best friend could practically be a fitness model and has fantastic arms and abs but she's a pear shape so any excess fat goes right to her butt, hips and thighs. I envy her belly and she envies my buns. As women, we tend to compare ourselves to others so you can't really say "don't do that" but when/if you do, don't let it get you down. We're all different...and what you hate about yourself, someone envies that or something else about you.0 -

If you're more of an hourglass shape, juniors clothing (even the supposed "curvy cuts" are not your friend) is not your friend. I've had some luck with the juniors/misses overlap (like a size 5/6 for example), but otherwise look for even numbered sizing. Research jeans or pants that fit your body type (I've heard wonderful things about the Levi curvy fits or whatever), then try sizings in those styles. You might very well be lower.
Otherwise... find a tailor. One of these days I'll do it, but it's been recommended everywhere I look for the issues of pants just not fitting correctly.
Ultimately for sizing, though, you just have to let it go. Is 13 (especially in juniors) a plus size anyway? I thought plus sizing was 14 or 16+? Regardless, you know your body looks better, so don't compare yourself to others! And small aside, you very likely didn't gain muscle while dropping 10 lbs, but you revealed more of it by maintaining LBM while dropping body fat. Which is great!
Quick Edit To Add: And are you a 13 in a certain brand you keep wearing or because you keep fitting into 13s you own? Many women fit into a variety of sizes across brands. I was claiming a larger size in pants forever until I realized, well, I DO fit into those 10s I've had for two years... but I also fit into many of these 6s.0 -
It could be how you're built, but it could also be because of the type of clothing you're wearing.
I'm considered a pear shape (43 inch hips with a 28 inch waist). In women's clothes (even sizes), I wear a 10-12. In junior's (the odd sizes), I need at least a 15 to fit in them. Junior's clothes are cut more narrow than women's clothing. You may be a 6-8 if you were wearing women's clothes. If the number on the tag is so important, go try on clothes to see if you fit in a 6. No one says you have to buy it, but then at least you'll know you can fit in the same size as those other girls. (IMO, I wouldn't worry since everyone is differently sized and shaped.)0 -

Yeah I'm a size 2-4 in misses and a 7-9 in juniors. Sometimes I can fit in a juniors 5 if the cut is right.0

First, it depends on your shape and frame... I'm a medium/large frame hourglass and will never fit in a size 0, for example (even vanity sized).
Second, it depends on the clothes brand. A lot of them offer vanity sizing and you can fit in a 6 of one brand and a 12 of another (not even kidding).
Third, have you actually tried smaller sizes? Last year I thought for sure that I was still in 18 and hadn't gone down a size, and I tried size 14 pants and they fit great. Clothes fit differently after you've worn them for a while.
Fourth, I don't even try the odd sizes because they fit differently.0 -

According to a lot of people 13 US is plus sized, and I seem to be 13 in most brands I've tried. I tried buying a size 9 as my goal pants and I try to fit into them once a week and still not there, can't get my thighs through >< Also I'm pretty sure I did gain muscle as I'm a lot stronger now and I've been lifting 4 times a week for 2 months.0 -

And if you have bigger hip bones, you may always wear a larger size than your friends. I know someone who dreams of wearing a size 8 but cannot get below a 10. But she is already thin, doesn't have a lot more fat that can come off, she just has wider hips than will ever fit in an 8.0 -
It depends on where the fat loss is and even if it is all fat loss. I was getting smaller pants in a no scale change period of time.0

When did 13 become plus sized? I thought Jr. Plus was sized the same as plus (or 14W-24W), and is cut quite differently than regular Jr. I was never be able to comfortably wear a Jr. size, since I'm tall with a long torso. Made me sad as a teenager, but ultimately I accepted my fate. Currently, I was a size 8, but I still can't wear Jr sizes. Shirts (even 13's, swimming on me elsewhere) don't reach my belly button, and pants don't clear my hips (it's the style I know, but I can't abide by plumber's crack)
Interesting that you say many people think US 13 is plus... they must not be in the United States.
There are lots of cute clothes in misses sizes. And lots of specialty stores that carry young styles in missy sizes.0 -

It should solve the thighs problem as well. You are going to have to try on different styles and types to get the right fit. They make all kinds now, for those who need it bigger in the butt but smaller in the waist, etc etc etc. But I would start just trying on some standard ones in a size 10, then go from there. There may also be some sizing charts somewhere where you can plug in your measurements.0 -

They're jeans, how many styles are there? If you're looking for skinnies or jeggings I know american eagle carries them in misses sizes. They also used to have "curvy" cut jeans there, which I loved, but I'm not sure they do anymore :grumble:0 -

The thighs are my issue too, and also I get a lot of gapping at the waist.

I was a size 12 when I was 18 yrs. old and 120 lbs. (BMI 18.8). I won't be 120 lbs. again unless I get really, really ill. Ha-ha.
I'm a size 14 when I'm anywhere from 150-165 lbs. (BMI 23.5-25.8) Yep, that's about it. I have these things called "hips." However, I can tell my real weight by how my pants *fit* and how I look in a dress or a bathing suit!! :blushing:0 -

OK well, if that isn't the problem, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you are not overweight and you have an hourglass shape, you probably just have a body difference like very wide hips, which is generally attractive to most people and not something to worry about anyways...who cares what the number on the pants say in that case! Nobody's going to say "Hey, that girl has a great figure...wait a minute, let me check her pants size to see if I'm right", at least not to check the number anyways...0 -
Yeah, I have a problem with thighs too. If pants fit my legs they're 2 sizes too big at the waist. And it just gets worse the fitter I get - fat comes off my waist but the muscle stays on my thighs.
As others have suggested, try a "curvy" style. They come in more at the waist. I'm a size 18 in regular jeans but 16 in most curvy jeans.0 -
I have been a size 10 at 140 pounds and at 170 pounds, both at a height of 5'7". The difference between the two was my body fat percentage. I did mostly cardio and ate 1200 calories a day to get to 140. I did some strength training and ate at a modest deficit at 170. I lost scale weight slower but dropped sizes faster. The body is a strange and amazing thing.0

As others have said, the odd number sizes are juniors sizes, which are cut to fit the bodies of adolescents and early teens. Meaning, they are specifically designed for people who are NOT curvy. If you are curvy, it's going to be hard to find a good fit and you're going to have to go way up in sizing. As clearly you've noticed!
Find some stores that carry ladies/misses sizes (even numbers). If you're looking for young/trendy styles you may want to try individual stores (i.e. the Gap, Urban Outfitters, H&M, etc.) instead of stores where the only "trendy" clothes are in the juniors section. Some larger department stores also carry specialty labels--there's on Macy's near me that carries Kenzo and Rachel Roy, for example, which have very trendy stuff.0 -
I started out in a size Misses 16. I now wear a Misses 8 after losing 40 pounds. I have an Hourglass figure.0

If you're curvy, some decent curvy pants are Eddie Bauer "Blakely" (Curvy) or "Mercer" (Slightly Curvy"). You can get everything from Jeans to Gabardine work slacks. At Old Navy, The Sweetheart is a good curvy fit or The RockStar. These are my go to pants that fit without any of the dreaded "waist gap." :flowerforyou:
Ann Taylor also has a curvy fit section, but I've never tried them (http://www.anntaylor.com/curvy/cat550084).

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. TIL that I am a size 8 in Marc Jacobs, but a size 10 in H&M and a size 13 in most juniors pants. I guess I'll probably just stick with the 13s for now since the majority of womens sized pants have the "mom jean" waist that I despise lol. But I feel a little better0
