My gym is 1.7 miles away from my house. I was thinking of saving money and just walking to the gym and back. However, I also lift and squat heavy and am scared that it will negatively affect my workout but sapping my energy,

are you eating at a deficit?

if so then you might get to the point where you're lifting so much that you barely have enough left for the walk home. heck i live 5 blocks from my gym and there have been times i have been very tempted to take the bus the 2 stops to my house because i was too tired. that's usually on heavy deadlift day though and i usually come home and promptly fall into a deadlift coma

I've run to my gym 2.5 miles away, did a good squat session then had to call my wife for a pick up.

Getting there and lifting will be fine. Getting home? Heh. Take cab fare.

Can you ride a bike instead? 1.7 miles on a bike is nothing.

oops wrong thread. i walk about .6miles to the gym one way. has up and down sections, has no bearing on my workouts other then warming my feet up.

Is walking that distance a workout for you? I bike 20 minutes up a hill to get to my gym and do fine, but it all depends on how fit you are.

A 20 minute hill? That must be a monster, what's the grade?

When I had a gym membership I would walk and it was 1.3 miles away. I'd do 45-60 mins of cardio there, then walk back. I did that for a couple years. I'd be exhausted by the time I got home but I sure was losing weight.

How long would it take you to run that?
It sounds about 10 minutes, which would then make it the perfect warm up.
