Modified Optifast

I am currently on a sort of modified Optifast diet where I am consuming between 1700 and 2020 calories daily depending upon activity. My goal is to get down from my 281 pounds to at least 181 or 200. I am sort of doing a Zone approach - 40-30-30 and then gradually decreasing because cold turkey has never really worked for me before. My goal is to get down to 1230 calories and then do the full program under the supervision of my nutritionist and see what happens from there. I just want to know people's thoughts on this: have you ever done full-fledged Optifast? Should I just simply take the plunge?

  • Hi Jadienne,
I started Optifast, full fast in November of 2013. I did full fast through this past April, fully 6months. I was down about 50 lbs in the first 4 months, and today, I'm down 86 lbs. For about the last 3months, I have incorporated some food 1 or 2 days a week, and just this month, I have pretty much reduced my meal replacements to just about 2. On days that I'm really busy, I might have replacements all day...just because it's easier. When I started, after about the first 3 or 4 days, I didn't really miss food. I should clarify that; I missed food, but was focused on the end results and I made regular food not matter. In some ways it was easier for me because I have a very busy life, and it was just easy and convenient to stick to the plan. I've gone from size 22/24 to 12/14. I want to lose another 20lbs and I'll revisit my goal. My starting weight was 288lbs. I would love to be 165, but my Dr. told me (also a very good friend) I can't lose that much or people I haven't seen in a while will think I'm dying. So I want to shoot for 180, see how I feel and look and go from there. I would love to be a size 8...but we'll see. Two months ago, I started working with a personal trainer, and have never felt better. Keep me posted, I'm happy to offer tips, or advice if it helps!
