23/M/330lbs Just signed up!

Not sure who will see this, or if I'm posting in the correct area, but here it goes. I'm a 23 year old male at approx 330 lbs. I weighed 225 lbs. around March 2012 and gained 155 lbs from 3/2012 to 12/2013. I started trying to lose weight around December of 2013. From 12/13 to 5/14 I lost 55 lbs and weighed in around 330-335. I broke my fibula (my leg) in May of 2014 and have been not able to walk since, doctor's orders. 6 weeks from now I will begin to walk and eventually jog/run again. I am completely new to this site and would love any suggestions or tips that I can be given. I have struggled with obesity since I was a teenager and am open to hearing all that you may have to say on the matter. Thanks!

Welcome to MFP! There's plenty of support and advice here. I suggest you log your food carefully and measure everything, if you aren't doing so already. That way you get accurate feedback. It will be great when you can walk again, just take it easy until then. In the meantime you can do some strength training for your upper body to get some exercise. Pumping iron makes me feel great. Best of luck to you!

welcome good sir,i too was once in the 300lb club, unfortunately for me it took a lengthy trip to the hospital and the harsh reality that i cant live off of 8000+ calories of food and alcohol daily. I'll give you the same tips i give everybody. Most people fail because they try to make drastic changes too quickly. If you are the kind of person who understands reaching your goal weight will not happen overnight you are already one step ahead. Figure out your TDEE and subtract your deficit from that. *No sense in cheating yourself out of perfectly delicious calories. Log accurately. Thats a given, get a cheap food scale, i got one from my job for 8 bux and if its accurate enough for the drug dealers its accurate enough to weigh my food. Add some lifting to your routine. Not only is it fun, but it will help preserve precious lean mass . Take some before picture and measure yourself at common areas *waist, thighs, arms, neck, etc* its a good reminder when you hit those frustrating weeks when the scale doesn't move, it'll show you that there is still progress happening. There is probably a lot more im missing but im sure more people will chime in. Just whatever you do, don't quit. You've lost weight before and you can do it again.

Thank you! I like what I see so far when it comes to this site. Yes, I have been logging all my food and that's mainly why I signed up here. I heard it's very accurate and so far so good. I lift free weights at home about 3-4 times per week and try to get in some stretches so that my body is ready for when I start walking again. Thank you for the encouragement and kind words!

@Captain_Wobbles: Lmao!! Also, I am going to look into buying a food scale soon. I think that's a great idea and will help me with portion control. Thanks for the tip! Keep up the hard work!
  • You seem dedicated, so I think you will succeed! It will take time, of course, and patience, but best of luck!

Portion control is a huge thing - people do not realize how much food goes into many recipes and meals. I use my food scale all the time, particularly if I make a meal I am not familiar with.
