EVERY FREAKIN' COMMERCIAL...slight rant

Is about some kind of unhealthy food! I am so sick of it! The only commercials that I have seen on TV about anything remotely healthy are the Truvia commercials, and Kashi commercials...ugh!!!! It seems like no matter what channel I am watching there will be a restaurant advertising a high calorie entree' or some kind of fat laden, HFCS infused new thing, that is on sale for a limited time. Then they show the thinnest healthiest people eating it in the commercial...I irks me to the core!

Ok Vent over LOL

I agree completely! I was just telling my husband yesterday, who weight about 140 wet, that all the commercials where about bad food that I can't have! No wonder Americans are obese even the TV is telling us to stuff our faces with crap!

Hahaha I hate those commercials because they make me hungry for bad food! Plus when I see thin people eating it then I think I can eat it and look like them (I actually know that is wrong, but I think it tricks your sub-conscious into thinking that way!)

It's not just you Americans that have it, last night here in the UK, every AD break had at least one bad food advert, thats about every 15 mins, sometimes it could be 3 food related ones, it really does, as I'm sure you're aware, make things much harder for us :(

That's a reason why America is so fat.

I don't know about you, but whenever I've been in fast food places...the people weren't thin.
  • I don't watch a lot of TV compared to some (whenever there's a new episode of Castle or Merlin, I'm there. When they're in repeats, the TV only gets turned on when I'm doing my exercise DVDs), but I did happen to turn it on last night to watch The Golden Globes. I came out of the award ceremony craving McDonalds chicken nuggets thanks to all those commercials! And I'm not a big fan of McDonalds at all!

Good vent and totally agree. Its a mind game :) and there is a lot of money to be made on processed foods with preservatives. BAD, BAD, BAD!! From experience I believe that the consumption of processed foods and preservatives actually entices my appetite making me want to eat more. Its like a biological override button that doesn't allow my body to stay full.

NOPE not usually! Maybe they should show those people in the commercials!

I hate it too. and then people ask why are we the fattest country or why are our kids obese. hello theres a fast food place in every corner. and kids watch these commercials and tell the parents that they want that on the tv and parents just give in.
  • We don't get TV at all for this reason & many others. What pipes in is unhealthy in so many ways, in our opinion. The food, the morals, the fact that it teaches us to be lazy & watch life, rather than participate in it.

We DO watch DVDs, though, and we can choose them with more control than we can control what would be piped in through cable/dish, etc. So we aren't COMPLETELY anti-TV, but pretty close.

Hope you can avoid those commercials! I know they would really bother me, as we are totally whole-foods lovers & our kids don't even know what junk food is. And I want to keep it that way.
    Good luck!

And that is part of why I canceled cable! I am tired of my kids being subjected to so much advertising...

I dont watch TV anymore - and when i do, i have to laugh. They show you food and then show you how to get thin, and they earn money on that cycle...resist:D!

Like a DVR? Yeah I have one, but if I am in the middle of watching something (not recording it) I will see the commercials...maybe I just should not watch anything while it is on???

It does get really annoying after a while especially since it is so inexpensive to eat junk food. A salad can cost almost $7.00 while a big yummy juicy burger is like $0.99.........so unfair!

off topic: jtreadwell: it took me long time to realize that even if that salad is so expensive and its "just a salad", its worth it. It changed my lifestyle completely. Im still working on it, but i really need to repeat myself that healthy food is simply worth it!:D

On the subject of fast food places and every one there not being thin. I have a friend that is going through a divorce and her soon to be ex keeps taking their girls to McDonald's every week. Well their daughter has gained over 20 lbs in a year and a half. Doctor is worried about the weight gain and asked the mom to watch what her daughter eats. She brings it up to the dad and he FREAKED out on her and told her once a week was not going to hurt her. uuummmm okay (sarcastic tone).

I agree that there are way too many commercials for unhealthy foods, That said, it is up to consumers to make good decisions. We cannot blame the advertising industry for our weight and health problems. We have to hold ourselves accountable. As I watch tv with my 8 year old daughter, I talk to her about these commercials. I tell her that everything they say isn't true and just because they say something is good, does not make it so. I also make comments on some food commercials about how gross it really is, and how unhealthy, etc. I am a little weary of Americans (too broad a generalization, I know) blaming our problems on someone else when we have the free will to do as we wish. We could stand strong against the major corproations who push all this crap, or we could just keep whining about it. Sorry to rant on your rant.

Point Well taken, however I never really said that I blame the commercials for me gaining weight, they are just a pain when I am restricting my calories and I am trying to eat fresher and healthier; especially when I am hungry or craving foods and then the commercial for a big gooey Snickers bar flashes on my screen...or a flame broiled whopper with Cheese (FOOD PORN) it should be restricted! LOL

Hey, I hear ya. It's annoying. I love that subway commercial they show every new year when ppl are eating burgers and fries and they bust their chair or exercise ball or their buttons pop off and put out a light. Not that subway is great or anything- I just find it funny.

It is up to us to make better decisions, but as I psychologist I could write you a thesis on why advertising works- and there are better psychologists out there being paid more than me to make sure the ads are working. There is a reason that the government banned the animated Camel's Cigarettes Camel.

I know. It wasn't directed at you or anyone in general. It just seems to be the way the world is going these days. I don't have problems with commercials because fast food isn't appealing anymore. I do have problems with all the food network shows I watch.

I downloaded this app on my phone called restaurant nutrition and you can look up every restaurant, fast food or otherwise and it shows you the amount of calories, fat, sodium etc. I found that after looking over some of the things what i normally eat, I actually dont really want to eat them anymore (as much!) just purely because of knowing how many calories and fat there is in some of the foods. It actually can make you feel kind of sick, especially if you have become a bit of a calorie Nazi like myself lately lol

  • Oh how true!
Another kind of TV ad I hate are those that target overweight people. Once there was one (by a very well known weight loss/food supply company) where a lady had realized that she was fat. She said she always thought she looked good but finally she realized that at a size 16 she was fat.
Well...just in case you didn't hate your size 16 body and were actually able to feel confident and beautiful, do we have news for you. What if someone watching the commercial had just gotten into a size 16 after struggling with weight loss. The older I get the more I seem to notice all the propaganda we are exposed to.

I agree that it is definitely worth it, but I just wish that is was a little less expensive to choose healthy options since it is what is best for all of us.
