OP, when you refer to "getting lights," what does that mean. (I understand it has to do with proper form/depth?)

There are three judges, one on each side, one at the front.

If the lift is good (for example depth for squats), the judge will give you a white light, if it's not then you'll get a red light. Two red lights means that the lift doesn't count.

Here's a shot that includes the lights.

Lifts can be given red lights for all sorts of reasons, for moving your feet after the call to squat or bench. For not waiting for the calls (ie press or rack in bench) or for not locking out a deadlift with both your hips and knees.

I was having problems locking out my bad knee, which is why I looked so worried in the picture above.

Thank you for the explanation. I am now interested in finding a novice competition myself.

    \o/ Yay for lady lifters!

And for what it's worth, I bench more than I squat, too, for now at least. I need to work on my stabilizing muscles around my hips and I'm rehabbing my lower back, as well, so I'm stuck on really light squats for a while (otherwise, my form breaks down and I risk injury, and no one wants that). Like, really light -- 65lb/30kg working set.

Bench press, though? That squat working weight is a warmup for bench press, and I'll be trying 100lb/45kg working sets today.

Yes, I laugh every time at the fact that my bench press keeps outrunning my squat.

I'm very glad that you posted this. I hear so many people talk about maybe doing a meet one day when they are better, stronger, you name it. Most of those people will never do a meet because they will never be where they think they need to be. I remember my first meet like it was yesterday. I also was the first one up squatting and I was terrified.

The powerlifting community is very friendly and supportive, particularly for new lifters.

I'm glad to hear you go lots of white lights. It's always disappointing to see novice lifters compete without any real knowledge of the rules and lose lifts on technicalities.
