Friday I'm driving 12 hours with my boyfriend and his family, I need to find some healthy snacks to take on the trip so that I'm not eating potato chips and other crap to help me stay awake during my part of the drive. Any Ideas???

- almonds (fat and protein)
- dried apricots (carbs, and fiber),
- beef jerkey (protein)
- those pouches of tuna and a fork (protein)
- hard boiled eggs or just egg whites (protein and maybe fat)
- Protein bars (Quest is best(Protein and ALOT of filling fiber)
- Sandwich with whole wheat bread, dijon mustard, and bunch of slices of turkey (Protein, carbs, fiber)
I can't think of anymore off the top of my head.
When you feel like eating some of the junk food, just try to think, "Am I REALLY hungry or do those chips just smell delicious?" For me, usually it's just a craving. And bring a bunch of water, like maybe a gallon, a large mouch drinking bottle, and just stop at gas stations to get cups of ice.0 -

My husband, kids and I do a lot of road trips, and what is listed above are a few things I pack. I also will take deli meat, veggies, Triscuit, and string cheese.0 -
Thanks so much for the ideas!!! I was completely drawing a blank on what to take0

Snacks and mini-meals on the road are all about making the choices in your bag more appealing than what you will find on roadside fast food joints and in convenience stores at gas stations.
Is it summer where you live? A great time to throw a small ice chest with those frozen ice packs (that don't leak) in the back seat and fill it with healthy sandwiches including plenty of lean protein for on-the-road sandwiches, hummus and baby carrots (more protein, and have the 'crunch factor') , lowfat yogurt, sugar free drinks, your water, and anything else you want to keep cool. You could pre-make a lean salad with chicken or turkey and a lowfat dressing to satisfy your munching urges. If you are not afraid of pasta and it fits into your calorie budget, a pasta salad is always nice to have on the road. Add in your own homemade (in liter sized water bottles) cucumber or lemon water, kept cool in your chilly bin.
I just got back from The States, and gorged myself on very affordable Bing cherries (don't forget to bring a small ziptop bag for the pits!), cut up watermelon, and other delicious fruits, all on the road.
I second the beef jerky (high in protein to keep you satisfied), 100-calorie portions of nuts (healthy fats and satiating), and a big bag (or two) of Skinny Popcorn (even if you eat the whole thing, you won't be doing much damage... and it fulfills your salty urges). I also like those Popchips, which ARE chips, but are not fried, so the calories are slashed. Whilst your travel partners dive into the fatty chips, you can have your portion (28 chips) of Popchips and not feel left out. Cracker Barrel makes some rocking 2% extra sharp cheddar sticks; throw in a container of rice crackers to eat with them. Seasoned tuna is a great snack, and if you don't eat it, you still have it if you get caught out at your destination!
If you are into sweets, I'm a big fan of those Werther's sugar free candies, m&m's (portioned into little packs of 20 candies), and fruit leather or gummies.
Little bags of those individually portioned instant oatmeals are great to keep on hand for travel or when you get to your destination (use microwaved water to heat them up).
Don't forget to pack yourself a roll of paper towels, and Ziptop bags in various sizes to reportion items, as well as a fork/knife/spoon for each of you plus one for serving and dealing to the food. You'll also need a few grocery bags to use as trash bags along the way. You'll also need a few paper plates and bowls, or if you are in an environmental mood, take a sturdy plate and bowl for each of yourselves. A microwaveable coffee cup each is always good, too. I always travel with a couple of tea towels or cloth napkins to make my travel food feel more like "real food" rather than just a fast snack.
Sounds like you'll have fun on your trip. Let us know how your snacks worked out!0
